    Simple Questions - August 06, 2020

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

SO excited. First build in 12 years ordered. Ready for MSFS, Dead Matter and Cyberpunk

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 04:50 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Very excited, just ordered the bits for my build. Haven't build a PC since my current one which was back in 2009.

    Upgrade path looks like:

    - CPU: I5 2500k to Ryzen 3700x
    - GPU: GTX1060 6GB to RTX2070 Super
    - RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600mhz to 32GB DDR4 3200mhz
    - Mobo: asRock Z68 extreme3 gen4 to Asus ROG B550 F Gaming

Also lucky enough to be given a 34" curved 4k 100hz monitor from my workplace.

This along with my Thrustmaster HOTAS should hopefully make a great setup for Microsoft Flight sim!

[Update] Lots of healthy debate here.

Given I am going to be gaming 95% of the time with this rig.

I looked up switching out to a 9700k.

The Intel option is actually the same price for me when all is said and done between CPU, mobo and cooler.

So AMD is going back and Intel in.

I think I over estimated how much id be doing non gaming related things.

Thanks everyone for opinions and insight.

Can't wait to get in game soon!

YSK that modular power supply cables are not universal and acting as if they are can result in fires or blown parts

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 07:07 AM PDT

Modular power supply cables often look very similar, but almost all of them have a seemingly random wiring system, making them incompatible between unit models.

For an example, if you bought a Corsair CX650M that was missing its SATA cables, you would have to specifically purchase SATA cables made for the CX650M.

If you instead used a SATA cable you pulled from your EVGA 1050W Supernova, the different wiring layout could result in serious issues, including the "blowing out" of either the power supply or the device you are connecting it to.

In some cases, this can even prove to be a fire hazard, especially with power supplies that dont have safety features built in.

There is no good "rule of thumb", as wiring can vary even within a brand. For an example, the cables used in the "new" version of the Corsair CX series are not compatible with first gen Corsair CX series, and HX series cables are not compatible with AX series power supplies. Etc.

The only way to know is to check if the manufacturer lists which cables are cross compatible. Corsair definitely does this, but most brands do not.

I am a computer technician and I cant tell you the number of clients that bring in systems with fried power supplies and motherboards because they got a deal on a modular PSU and just bought generic cables.

Stuck in an infinite "let's get a few basic things out of the way" loop. Help would be appreciated.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:27 AM PDT

I was stuck in an infinite boot loop before this, managed to get through that hurdle by using a Windows bootable USB. This is the only link I have found relating to a problem that's similar to mine https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/w10-stuck-on-lets-get-a-few-basic-things-out-of/13ec00a7-23ac-471d-bb05-4f8edc0cdb14

I'm defintely not a computer expert and any help or direction would be appreciated.

Background: I recently got an upgraded GPU, CPU and a MOBO.

    Completed my first build!

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:42 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone!

Finished my first build a few days ago!

Thank you for the help, a lot of my knowledge has come from reading through these posts and this community. Wouldn't have been able to do this without this thread or YouTube!

There are some mistakes here and there, but nothing irreversible. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the build!

Please, be gentle. I'm new to the pc AND reddit worlds. If I'm asking the impossible, dont shred me.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 01:14 PM PDT

Well its built and running well for a few days now. After waiting to make sure its stable, of course I have been going crazy customizing. Let me get straight to it. I want my desktop icons to be application icons. I know how to get rid of arrows and text on desktop icons. What i want is them to behave like the icons in the taskbar. Is this possible? Or is there just some bangin' taskbar tool kit i cant seem to find? I'm trying rainmeter, I'm not really sure how to use it though. I tried dropping my games down to the taskbar and settling for using a taskbar but they turned to steam and epic icons and unless you can't tell, that does not work for me ascetically. Sorry, I am so very new to all of this. But i have learned so much already thanks to the communities i have found on reddit. Any way, have a great day!

    ♥ My Gaming Beast ♥

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 10:54 AM PDT

    My potential PC build

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 02:49 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I am new to building a PC and I have drafted the following build. I live in the UK and my budget is around £1000 , for a decent gaming PC that can play the latest games at high settings on 1080p with framerates over 60 FPS. I'm assuming I do actually need a Wireless card since the motherboard I picked doesn't have any Wi-Fi capability. Overclockers UK built a custom desktop PC for me since I don't really have the confidence to do it myself back in 2015 because I felt like I could easily fuck the build up and waste loads of money and since it's 5 years later, it's definitely time for a better PC. I currently do all my gaming and work on my Lenovo Legion gaming laptop which is at this point better than my desktop setup. I could also reuse my 1TB SSD that I installed a while ago on my desktop to save a bunch of cash, and I already have a monitor. Would like feedback on the stuff I've picked already.

Is the 2060S worth it vs 1660S for my build?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 01:07 PM PDT

I built a PC about a year ago that I was using for non-gaming purposes, but I want to upgrade it now by buying a proper graphics card. I'm trying to decide between the RTX 2060 super (~$410) and GTX 1660 super (~$230). I'm a casual gamer, basically only playing COD and occasionally Madden or American Truck Simulator. My current build:

    Intel Core i5-7500 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor ASRock B250M-HDV Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 CL16 Memory LG UK27500-W Monitor (4k, 60hz)

I know obviously the nicer card will be better, but is it worth the extra ~$200? And if I do go with the 1660S will it be obsolete in the near future with all the RTX cards?

PC doesn't boot after working just fine yesterday.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 03:35 AM PDT

Like the title said pc was working fine yesterday the only thing I did was format the secondary drive to gpd (even made a post here about formatting the drive here) and the pc worked fine for the rest of the day but now it refuses to but only appears the screen flashing with the little white bar. Do I need to change something in the Bios for it to boot now? I tried to look it up but I can't find the solution.

What are the odds of damaging the CPU when swapping a cooler?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 06:59 AM PDT

Title. From what I understand you need to heat up the CPU, slightly twist and then carefully pull out the old cooler, clean the CPU with a microfiber cloth/thermal paste remover, re-apply the new thermal paste, and then mount the new cooler. Is it a dangerous process or fairly easy? Sorry if this is a dumb topic. Thanks in advance.

Is this the only point of building a PC with x570 or B550 right now? (August 2020)

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I'm a first time builder with minimal knowledge, so if the following is wrong then by all means, let me know:

    • B550 and X570 use the AM4 socket.

    • B550 and X570 allow for PCie 4, but this won't be needed for graphics cards for quite some time. PCie 3 is still more than capable of handling even a 2080 TI.

    • The next generation of AMD CPUs is Ryzen 4000. After Ryzen 4000, the following generation of AMD CPUs (presumably Ryzen 5000) will use a new socket (presumably AM5), as their 5 year promise of supporting the AM4 socket will have expired.

    • Therefore B550 and X570 are only good for one more generation of CPUs, Ryzen 4000.

    • While it's confirmed now that B450 and X470 will work with Ryzen 4000, (as AMD changed their minds on this), in order to take full advantage of all the new features of Ryzen 4000 you will need a B550 or X570 board.

    • So if you have to build a PC right now (early August 2020), the only reasons to choose B550 or X570 is because:

    1. You're interested in upgrading your chosen CPU (presumably 3rd gen Ryzen) the very next generation, i.e. Ryzen 4000

    2. You want to take full advantage of all the new features of Ryzen 4000.

    • If you have to build a PC right now but you're happy enough with your chosen Ryzen 3000 CPU, and you're not interested in Ryzen 4000, then there's no point in choosing a B550 or X570 motherboard, because:
    1. B450 is less expensive and runs Ryzen 3000 just fine

    2. You're not interested in upgrading to Ryzen 4000, and B550 and X570 won't allow you to upgrade your CPU past Ryzen 4000 anyway.

So is this correct guys? Again, if wrong please let me know. Thanks.

    5600XT or 1660S?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 01:06 PM PDT

Which card should I go for with my ryzen 5 3600 build? I can afford either, but not more than 5600xt really. I'm going to be doing 1080p gaming but sometime soon I'll probably go up to 1440p. I want the more power of the 5600xt, but I'm worried about driver issues. Can anyone speak from experience and/or give a good suggestion?

Is an i5 7400 7th gen still good in 2020?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 04:03 AM PDT

I'm trying to build my first gamer pc and this is my current motherboard: Asus H170-PLUS D3. I want to upgrade my CPU (Intel i3-6100 3.70GHz) to an i5, and buy a graphic card (RX 570 8GB).

I was told that my current mother supports up to 7th gen intel but in my country the i5 7400 is more expensive than an Intel I5 9400f 4.1ghz.

Also, I want this build to last up for several years.

Do you recommend this CPU or is better to think in a new mother+cpu with said graphic card (or something similar in that price range)?

    Thank you!

    $1300 CAD build. Opinions?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 10:28 AM PDT

I'm looking to sell my old system and keep the storage since I don't want to redownload all my games again (boot drive on an 256GB Intel SSD, games on a 1TB hard drive). My previous system had an i5-7500 with a GTX 1070, not bad by any means, but I would love to be MSFS and Cyberpunk ready. Also, the reason I plan to opt for the B550 as opposed to the B450 is that I plan to upgrade down the road when Ryzen's 4000 series becomes available. That won't be for a couple years though, but it's one less thing to upgrade.

Note: I won't be buying the RTX 2060 listed in the build, rather a RTX 2070 for the same price.
