This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    My build is finally done!

I know, its very basic! No RGB or other cool stuff but I love the way it looks!

Yes, I'm using SSD Trays to hide the cables. (Cable Management in N200 with a non-modular PSU is hard)

I couldn't have done this without the help and tips from you guys. This is the result of saving and researching for over 6 months! Thank you for being a part of my journey which resulted in this.

    My Build :

    • Ryzen 5 2600
    • Asus ROG Strix 1660 Super
    • TeamGroup T-Force Vulcan TUF 2 x 8GB DDR4 @ 3000Mhz.

I'll be damned, Stefan Etienne was right

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 03:05 PM PDT

Welp, it happened bois. I actually used an allen wrench for my PC today.

Installed an Alphacool Eiswolf 240 GPX on my 5700 XT. 4 screws actually need to be screwed down with an allen wrench, although it is provided.

On a serious note, he still shouldn't be let within a mile of a PC build.

What is wrong with my newly build PC?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 07:45 AM PDT

Hi there and thanks for checking in!

I just finished building my first ever computer and promptly encountered a problem that is really bothering me, as I don't have a single clue of what could be wrong with my system.

When I start the PC via the power button it starts booting multiple times in a row until it finally boots cleanly.

As you can see in the attached video, my mainboard is checking the components. Thanks to the little led-dot on the mainboard, you are able to see how much time it takes checking the DRAM. When it is done checking the DRAM it jumps to the VGA. After that it immediatly seems to cut the power to nearly all components and restarts the boot-sequence.

Here is a list of things I already tried and checked without success:
    - Disconnected the graphics card and booted via onboard graphics.
    - Switched around the ram slots, although I straight away used the recommended ones from the manual.
    - Tried each stick single in every slot.
    - Booted with and without XMP-profile enabled.
    - Changed the different RAM voltage settings via BIOS.
    - Reset the CMOS.
    - Booted with all fans disconnected as they seem to run out of power first during the reboot.
    - Checked the BIOS version.
    - Checked multiple compatibility lists online - all indicate that the system should be perfectly compatible.
    - Tried "cold boot" and turning off the PSU before a restart.
    - Booted without SSD and HDD attached to the mainboard - so the operating system isn't part of the problem.

In every case: The problem stayed.

But here is the thing: Once the system has booted, it runs perfectly smooth! I already played some rounds of CoD Warzone and Battlefront II on highest settings for multiple hours without encountering any errors and having a perfect temperature. And CPU-Z and multiple other detection software recognize every single component - both RAM sticks included.

My PC specs are the following:
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8x 3.60GHz So.AM4
MB: Gigabyte B550 AORUS PRO AM4
GPU: 8GB Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700XT AORUS 8-GD
RAM: 16GB (2x 8192MB) Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 DIMM CL16 red (I just ordered a different RAM kit for testing purposes: 16GB (2x 8192MB) G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200 DIMM CL16. Will surely try that out.)
PSU: Be Quiet! BN235 E10-CM-600W Straight Power "Modular" 80+ Gold
OS: Freshly installed copy of Windows 10.

    Link to the video: https://imgur.com/a/SQmgIML

Right now I just can't manage to find the exact cause for the problem and certainly not the solution.
Maybe one of you wonderful people got any idea of what is going on in my PC and I am grateful for every little bit of help I can get.

Cheers and have a nice weekend!

    Aorus B550 m.2 SSD Issue

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 01:07 PM PDT

I'm doing a new PC build, and I went with two m.2 SSDs. Both 1TB, one is PCIe gen4 and the other is PCIe gen 3. When the gen 4 ssd is in the gen 4 slot, and gen 3 ssd is in the gen 3 slot, the motherboard doesn't seem to recognize both. However, if I switch the two, they both show up in the BIOS.

That obviously defeats the purpose of having paid the premium for a PCIe gen 4 m.2 ssd, so I'm hoping that's not the solution.

I know that in the motherboard's manual, it says that if there's an m.2 ssd in the gen 3 slot that the neighboring PCIe gen 3 x4 slot is disabled, but that's not a problem as the only other thing plugged in is the GPU in the PCIe gen 4 x16 slot.

Any ideas as to what I'm missing here? I've searched through the BIOS but I'm not seeing anything promising. Cheers!

As a life long laptop user, all I can say is wow.

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT

A long time lurker of this sub but never had a desktop PC, till now.. I just finished my first build a few days ago and I couldn't be happier, I knew this would be faster than a laptop but damn. Everything about it is so much smoother, and I can actually game if I want, I look forward to doing anything on it.

Also the build itself was fun and to my surprise pretty straight forward, I didn't run into any real problems. Watching the same "How to build a PC" videos 5+ times each definitely helped haha.

Anyway, thank you r/buildapac for pushing me to build PC

SMOKING cable! Need help with Fan Controller!

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 01:46 PM PDT

Bought a Rosewill Cullinan RGB case with preinstalled fans and controller (pictured here,m but instead of a SATA cable it was a molex... which got interesting)/hub. Could not for the life of me figure out what I was supposed to do with the cables attached to the bottom of the fan hub.

One cable (power) was a 4 pin female that became a male and female molex cable, which I figured just plugged into the PSU, so I did that. It started SMOKING. Unplugged it very quickly. It melted the cable and I am very certain that the fan hub may be out of order. Pin holes have a green-gray gunk around them which I'm fairly certain is self-made corrosion. Turns out the molex I had plugged in was 3 pin where the cable that was plugged into the controller had a 4 pin.

The other three-pin cable inside is fine to my knowledge. Looks like it goes to my motherboard for something, but it turns out my z170x does NOT have an ARGB / LED pin header anywhere except for the IO panel, which is only 5v.

I just want air intake in my fucking case. Please help, I need someone to think for me for a moment because I was so scared that my computer just fried that I cried. Alas, my PC turns on after having worked for a couple hours on transferring parts into this new Rosewill case, and my CPU is sitting at ~29C idle with fresh thermal paste and a new noctua exhaust for the 212 EVO and my 2080 super waterforce is sitting at ~31C idle.

If I bought this and just plugged the fans that are currently plugged into the most-likely-fried Rosewill fan hub to get some kind of air flow into my case and sacrificing the RGB that I do NOT have capability for on my motherboard, would I have functioning fan intake in my case? As I understand it, I would just use a PSU-to-Sata cable and plug that into the controller, and then the fans into the controller, and... that's it? But then how do I connect that to my motherboard? Doesn't it need to be attached to my motherboard for variable speed? Or is it something like... as the computer draws more power, the PSU sends higher output to the fan hub, addressing their speed?

If someone could also take a look at the gigabyte z170x gaming 7 and let me know if there is a way to get the RGB on the fans working, that would be great, but really I just need the fans to fucking spin.

I am so stressed. Thank you for reading and for any advice you may have.

    My First Pc Build

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 12:07 PM PDT

Hey I've been a casual PC gamer for a bit, but I finally decided to take the leap from my crappy 2015 Mac Air laptop to trying to build a PC. I had a friend who has built almost this exact pc except for a few components like the motherboard, case fans, case, and the keyboard. It seems to run really well for him, but I wanted to make this post to ask for advice from the community. If any of you have any suggestions to help make this build more efficient, but still at the $1500 price range feel free to leave suggestions in the comments. I'm still very new to pc gaming so I'll appreciate any suggestions.

P.S. I know the motherboard does not have wireless capabilities and I already have a wireless network adapter to fix that.

Improving an almost 10 year old Dell

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 01:33 PM PDT

I have six sticks of ram for a Dell that supports dual channel. Four sticks are Samsung 4gb ddr3. Old computer, I want the most out of it. The other two sticks are 8gb, I got them from my brother but they run different frequencies so I'm assuming they cannot be ran dual channel. Do I keep the 4 4gb in, or two 4gb and two 8gb sticks?

Building my own PC today, excited and nervous!

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 05:56 AM PDT

Today I'll be building my very own PC. I'm excited becuase I always had hand me down computers that yes I was happy to have but I just couldn't keep up with my friends 2.5ghz while I ran my 500 something mhz.

Now years later, working hard and slowly saving up money, I can't wait for today.

I wanted a build that was fast, solid and will last a very long time. I enjoy Game Development so I know I needed something a bit beefier and I love to game and stream too.

I'm really looking forward to joining the PC MASTER RACE and I wanted to thank you guys for this subreddit, your knowledge and tips!!

Here's my build named Arctic Blast. Arctic for the white and blast because hopefully it's fast haha

Some Notes** I already have the acer monitor and a keyboard (not listed). There are some parts I wish I had some extra budget for like white rgb ram or an extra set of white fans, and I wish I realized the white PSU came with white cables (major facepalm) but now I can stay excited for upgrades! Yay!

Thanks again guys! See you on the other side!

    Aio problems

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 02:27 PM PDT

Im currently running a Ryzen 5 3600x with a Cooler Master Masterliquid Ml240 rgb v2. I have a situation where the aio pump would make a whinning/Ringing noise during gaming loads and the start up would have gurgling noises. Is there anything I could do to fix that?

Also, when feeling the aio tubes, i can only feel one tube vibrating and the other a little less.

    Did custom fan curves.

Should I switch out my fans to reduce noise over top the noise already produced from the pump?

    Help please

(if need be, Im open to suggestions in changing my aio to another aio that serves quiet cooling along with performance)

    Upgrade options

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 02:17 PM PDT

    Hi

I upgraded my pc back in 2017 with a build which i think was mainly focused on getting good value for money. I'm interested in working out what the cost would be to get my build up to spec to run something like Monster Hunter World reasonably well- I realise that's probably gonna mean Motherboard/GPU/CPU all needing upgrading (my MB is FM2+). Full current specs are below, any recommendations are appreciated. (I also have a 1TB SATA storage not listed below but obviously I would be running any games from a SSD)

If there's a staged upgrade path i can follow as well that would be helpful to know - ie if i upgrade my MB/CPU seperately to the GPU etc.
