Wholesome Build (PC Gamer Mom teaches son how to build a Gaming PC)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:24 AM PDT

I dont have the option to add the photos here, so heres the link to the build.

My son also got his first lesson in DOA Mobos. As you will see we originally had an ASUS Prime X570-P board for our system, but one of the VRMs was bad and was not sending the nessescary power to the GPU. So we went with an X570 Auros Elite board, and I have to say, I love this board. The thermals have been great, and the performance for Gen 4 speeds met my expectations considering the board is 4 layer and not 6 layer.

    Parts list: CPU - Ryzen 9 3900X

GPU - MSI Ventus RTX 2080 Super

    RAM - Patriot Steel Series 32gb (16x2) DDR (3200MHz)

Mobo - X570 Aorus Elite Wifi

    PSU - Corsair RM750x

Cooler - Corsair H100i platinum AIO

    Storage: - Corsair Gen 4 M.2 MP600 1TB - Toshiba X300 6TB HDD

My monitors are duel Acer Nitro XZ272U 27in 1440p 165Mhz.

Thanks for stopping by for the wholesomeness. I hope I made your day a little brighter =)

After using horrible laptops my entire life, I finally pulled the trigger and splurged went overkill with my first PC build!

    Parts List & Pictures

I was super anxious and spent two whole days slowly reading every manual that came with every piece and putting this rig together, and I'm happy to report everything went smoothly!

Just wanted to give a big thanks to this sub for all the resources, information, and help that is shared here <3

Just built a new PC with 3300x and 1660 Super designed as "temporary placeholders" until Zen3 / Ampere arrive but it is impressive how much performance these get you for your money gaming at 1440p...

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:00 AM PDT

Hi guys. My laptop recently died which was a 2016 HP Omen 17 with 7700HQ and GTX 1070m. As I needed something to do photo editing on and wanted to do some gaming, while being aware that we are very close to the release of Zen 3 and Ampere, I decided to buy the 3300x and a 1660 Super as "placeholder" or "temporary" solutions.

Holy crap I was not expecting these levels of performance either in productivity or gaming at 1440p!

    My full rig is:

    • MSI Unify X570 - $300 (managed to randomly find a batch in stock at Amazon UK)
    • AMD 3300x - $120
    • Gainward 1660 Super - $230
    • 32GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600 - $215 (no issues, runs great)
    • 2TB Adata SX8200 Pro SSD - $290 (1TB wasn't enough on my laptop with all my games/mods and this will last me ages)
    • BeQuiet! 500DX - $100 (awesome case, runs cool, comes with 3 fans and is very well designed)
    • Seasonic Focus GX850 - $120 (amazing PSU for the money and will handle any upcoming CPU and GPU)

This rig chews through every gaming or productivity task (mostly Lightroom with many 42MP photos) I have thrown at it and it is seriously impressive how much processing performance $120 on a CPU gets you nowadays.

The MSI X570 Unify is a little more than I wanted to spend on a mobo, but the MSI X570 Tomahawk was out of stock everywhere and I am ok with paying an extra $50 if it means actually being able to build my PC and not wait for weeks until they arrive. It's very well-featured but has a learning curve after so long using laptops so I am now learning the settings etc.

The 1660 Super is so tiny yet packs in so much performance that it has really pleasantly surprised me. I haven't yet tried a ton of games but Total War Warhammer 2 and Witcher 3 Redux (graphically stunning) run smooth as butter at 1440p with all details maxed out vs my old laptop and the minimum framerates are great (yes I know they are not the newest games).

The Scythe Mugen 5 cooler is a very strong performer and my CPU maxes out on boost to 4.35ghz easily, meaning that I haven't yet seen the need to mess around with overclocking, although I may try undervolting soon to lower thermal output.

The Be Quiet! 500DX is such a well-designed high airflow mesh case that was a cinch to build in with excellent cable management and it look great. It runs cool and comes with 3 fans, although I may change these for PWM later.

The rest of the components all seem very high quality and I think I made good choices in terms of price/performance. I needed a high capacity SSD and the Seasonic Focus GX850 PSU just feels WAY more expensive than its price-point suggests.

So yeah, in summary I got the 3300x and 1660 Super as "temporary placeholders" for when Zen3 and Ampere arrive, but the performance they give both generally and while gaming really has a kick to it and these components would make a very competent budget gaming build if you put them into a rig with lower overall specs. :)

Common problems and their common solutions

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:52 AM PDT

Common problems and their common solutions:

My monitor says no signal when I turn on my PC.

If you have a dedicated GPU connect your display cable to that rather than the motherboard's rear I/O.

My RAM is running at half the speed it should be.

It is a common misconception to consider MT/s (megatransfers per second) as MHz (megahertz). Even manufacturers are guilty of labelling their RAM as 3200MHz when it is in fact 3200MT/s. Now DDR stands for "Dual Data Rate", so the data rate or megatransfers per second is double the clock speed meaning if your RAM says 1600MHz it is perfectly normal. If you by chance purchased 4266MT/s RAM and it is saying 2133MT/s you probably haven't enabled A-XMP or D.O.C.P.

My hard drive shows up in the BIOS but in File Explorer it is missing.

You need to initialize the drive. Open the run dialog (Win+R), type "diskmgmt.msc", hit enter, find your Disk, right click it and click "Initialize Disk".

My AMD Ryzen 3000 CPU has high idle temperatures in the range of 40-60°C.

This is typical behaviour of the CPU, AMD's boosting algorithm aggressively boosts at high voltages during burst activity such as opening a program or a background program doing something.

I get BSODs and many of them have the error text: "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT", but only with the XMP or D.O.C.P profile enabled.

There are 2 possible issues here:

    1. Your RAM is faulty, and unable to stably run the XMP or D.O.C.P profile and you should return it.
    2. If you are on a Ryzen 1000, Ryzen 2000, or Ryzen 3000G (G CPUs are 1 architecture behind) and you are trying to run memory past 3400MHz your integrated memory controller on those chips cannot handle those speeds. If you are on a Ryzen 3000 non-G CPU and you are trying to run memory past 3600MHz your Infinity Fabric cannot handle those speeds without voltage tuning.

    My Wi-Fi adapter doesn't work.

You probably don't have the drivers installed. You can either download them by connecting your PC to your router with a cable, or use another device to download them and put them on a USB.

When I turn my PC off my peripherals remain lit.

Disable Windows 10's "Fast Boot" feature. Your PC will boot slower but it should fix this issue. If it does not you also need to enable ErP Control in your BIOS (may take some digging) in conjunction with disabling "Fast Boot".

To disable it you need to open the run dialog (Win+R), type powercfg.cpl, hit enter, in the sidebar click on "Choose what the power buttons do", click "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)". Honestly got no idea why Microsoft recommends this, it does more harm than good.

Now for some general things you should do to your PC:

    - Disable Windows 10's "Fast Boot" feature. You may think this is a great thing, and while it does make your PC boot faster it has adverse effects like not reloading drivers on startup and the problem with peripherals being lit as I alluded to before.

To disable it you need to open the run dialog (Win+R), type "powercfg.cpl", hit enter, in the sidebar click on "Choose what the power buttons do", click "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)". Honestly got no idea why Microsoft recommends this, it does more harm than good.

    - Install your chipset drivers. Get them from Intel or AMD, not the motherboard vendor. The motherboard vendors tend to have outdated versions on their sites. Chipset drivers can fix stability issues within the system and improve overall performance.

    - Enable your X.M.P or D.O.C.P profile if you have RAM that is 3000MHz or higher in the BIOS.

If you've got any other additions to the list let me know!

Few tips from a first-time builder for the fellow beginners

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 04:10 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Yesterday I've finally built my first PC ever and I'm beyond happy! But I've encountered a few issues and made some very rookie mistakes which I'd like to share since I've seen many people here look for such tips and gather them before building on their own.

I'm obviously still learning and this can be very obvious to most of you but I'm sharing this with people who are the first timers just like me.

    1. Make sure you use all of the standoff holes in your mobo. I went for the MicroATX mobo which has 6 holes. But my case only had 4 standoffs preinstalled and had 2 additional ones in the package. However I overlooked these 2 and only used 4 that were preinstalled (the top ones, and the ones I overlooked were on the bottom). When I was plugging in the cables on the bottom of the mobo (hd audio, usn, front panel connectors) the mobo was bending real hard and it was very hard to plug them properly. I used my finger to apply pressure from the back but it was still hard and not a good practice to bend it like that. Only then I realized the bottom of the mobo didn't have the standoffs so I had to unscrew the mobo back and lift it to put them where they belong.
    2. Make sure you've mounted the CPU fan correctly. Mine was the Intel stock one, and it's a very simple process but I somehow screwed it up. It requires you to turn the knobs and then press on them. But I've only turned them, didn't press and it seemed fine to me. And then the horror happened when I was already using my PC and decided to look inside the case... only to see that my CPU cooler was literally hanging on the mobo with the cable stuck in the fan blades! PC was magically still working so I turned it off normally from Windows, plugged everything off and fixed the cooler. Also make sure the CPU fan cable doesn't get in the way of the fan.
    3. Double check every connection and make sure it is plugged in properly. This doesn't need explaination I think; when I was fixing the cooler I've found that the CPU power connector wasn't sitting in the slot perfectly so I fixed that too.

Hopefully this helps someone! Again, I know this are very rookie mistakes and obvious things for most of you so please don't look down on me. I just want to help fellow beginners so they don't make these mistakes.

My First Ever PC Build (On a budget)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:59 AM PDT

After spending most of my "gaming" years on a G50 Lenovo Laptop, I finally had the courage to build my very own gaming rig. Had to restrain myself in regards to going all out due to having university as a priority, hence the budget GPU. Also the prices listed below are well-above the normal price here in Australia (around $1800+ AUD total?).

A big shout-out to this subreddit (and a handful of youtube tutorials!). Seeing everyone's builds finally pushed me to build my very first PC.

Does AMD Ryzen Desktop 3000 ready mean you can immediately put 3rd Gen Ryzen cpu's without doing any extra steps (like configuring some things in the BIOS)?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:48 AM PDT

New to PC building. Just learned about this whole Bios update thing. Learned that B450 MoBo initially supports 2nd gen Ryzen but needs an update to support 3rd gen Ryzen cpu's but I didn't know how to do it without needing an old cpu. But I found out that they offer an already updated MoBo and now I just need confirmation. Do I need to do anything else or do I just slap the cpu on the socket and it's good to go? Thank you for your answers!

    Should I upgrade from Ryzen 5 1600 to Ryzen 5 3600?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:10 AM PDT

I'm planning on this mainly to be for hosting various things, so any help would be appreciated. It will have 32GB of RAM as well as a 500GB M.2 and about 5TB HDD.

Is it worth the upgrade? Or are there any other recommendations?

What about possibly a 2700X? I don't have the budget for the 3700X tho...

    Cousin's First Build

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:43 PM PDT

Hello, my cousin is looking to build his first pc. He's been gaming on laptops since like 2012 and is finally treating himself to a pc. I tweaked his original partpicker list, and I think it looks decent as is, but I honestly don't have that much experience building pcs either aside from the one I have built and been upgrading for myself over the past 3 years.

    Anywho, here is the partpicker build;

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/WZHPBZ

He has already let me know that money isn't an issue for him at all, and is really just trying to treat himself. I already let him know that the next generation of gpus are coming out in like half a year tops, and that he should probably just wait and get a new gen gpu when it comes out. He is totally fine just getting a 1060 for now if the rest of the build is good, and just upgrading to a new gpu when they come out. He is a little worried though that there might be compatibility issues with the system and the next gen gpus.

If anyone has any feedback, or modifications, that's really what I'm looking for to help my cousin get a system he can really enjoy and treat himself to.

Planning my first build - Where can I trim the fat?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:42 PM PDT

As I expect happens with many, I did not plan ahead for peripherals and overshot my initial budget of ~$1200. Not necessarily a firm limit, but I'm looking for places where I can cut costs without a significant drop in performance. If this were your build, where would you feel most comfortable in making reductions? Any changes or pointers in general?

This PC will be mostly used for gaming - I'm looking forward to Tarkov and Overwatch, and keeping my eyes open for new games. I already have a Windows key so I should be set on the OS. I haven't picked out a mouse yet but understand that there are some good options for < $50.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Anyone returned from custom loop to aio/air cooling?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:19 PM PDT

    Hello,

I've been thinking of returning back to "regular" cooling after 3 years of custom looping because I just feel that I rather have maintenance free system. Is there anyone who has done this and could say am I going to regret it? Like was the GPU fan noise noticable than you remember etc? Did you go back to custom loop?

I was thinking of getting some aio + air cool the gpu. (I would think of NHD15 but it doesn't go with a vertical GPU and blackrock doesn't fit with RAM.)

Please help me by giving some opinions. :)

Just built my first PC- it won’t shut down.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 04:47 PM PDT

So i just built my first PC yesterday. I got it to load up first try, downloaded windows, all the drivers etc. The problem is it takes 20 minutes to shut down after downloading everything. Anyone have an idea as to why? It powers up quickly, but i can't get it to shutdown asap from the windows screen. Thank you for any help! (It's shutting down right now)

edit: it powered off so i rebooted it up and clicked restart. right now it's been restarting for 6 minutes.

edit:2 it took 25 minutes to restart

    edit:3 Parts list https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZN8HTC

edit:4 it shuts down now in 10 seconds. I pushed in all the connections on the motherboard i guess one of them was loose. thank you everyone for helping!

Is my 6 month old hdd broken?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:51 PM PDT

The hdd is 6 months old and is a seagate barracuda 2tb. I'm using latest version of Windows 10. There was a corrupt game folder that appeared yesterday after I uninstalled titanfall 2 and I let it be until today when I got a notification from windows "restart to repair drive errors". After I restarted my pc using that notification every single game I had on that hard drive(around 9 games) had 90% of the folder missing and were really small in size(a few mb or the highest was 200mb). The only things that were still working were steam and msi afterburner. And it appeared as the hard drive still had 1tb occupied. I ran seagatetools and ran a S.M.A.R.T test, a short test and a long test and it said it passed all of those. I am now doing a long format on the hard drive. Am I screwed? Could it have been a windows problem?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Hi BAPC. I bought these parts and put it together for my dad, but when I tried to turn it on, I got 3 beeps, and the debug light is on DRAM. I have the RAM slotted into DIMMA2 and DIMMB2 as per the motherboard's instructions.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I have tried slotting in only one stick of RAM, and swapping the sticks. I have double checked the 8-pin CPU power and 24-pin motherboard power connectors are in. I have not yet tried to flash the BIOS, but I am unsure if that will fix the problem.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First time ever doing this so wanted some friendly internet troubleshooting on my build.

    (2) biggest questions I have are:

Is the 5700 worth it over the 5600? 5700s seem super difficult to find but I don't want to compromise my build because I'm impatient.

I get a compatibility note between my motherboard and PSU about an extra 4-pin connector but after a lot of online reading I feel like I can ignore it?

Anyways just want a moderately future proof comp exclusively for gaming that runs smooth on ultra (PoE, Battlefield etc). All feedback welcome!

What ram module should I get? I dont get ram

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:26 PM PDT

My motherboard is an a320m-k with a ryzen 5 3600.

Current ram is m378a1g43db0-cpb (2x8gb of ram at 2133mhz)

Im thinking about getting either "TEAMGROUP T-Force Night Hawk RGB 3200MHz (TF1D416G3200HC16CDC01)

    Or

    TEAMGROUP T-FORCE DELTA RGB (TF3D48G3200HC16C01)

Will my mobo be able to run ram at 3200?

PC Turns off during heavy load (games/editing)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:32 AM PDT

It's a long story: About two weeks ago my pc began shutting off randomly, after checking it, it was the PSU fan that was stuck due to a heavy layer of dust. So I cleaned it up, did general maintenance and it worked for a day. Then, it began shutting down again, however, this would only happen during attempts of video editing/rendering, or when trying out a heavy tittle like CoD Warzone, otherwise, it would work just fine for hours.

So, I saved up for two weeks to replace the PSU, as everything pointed out it was the culprit, activating the bios surge protect even showed that the psu has an inestable surge. So that said, I get a new PSU, gold certified and modular, the best option around here as everything else was on the bottom barrel option or just too pricey compared to this Core reactor.

PC worked fine, for exactly THREE HOURS, after that, it began shutting down again during the same exact tasks. It would even power down during standy after a previous power down.

-Temps (CPU/GPU) never go above 60°c even when it shuts down. -The ram test didn't show problems

So I ask, is it possible that during the period of two weeks that It took me to change the PC and the overall time I spent with that old psu without knowing it began kicking the bucket, that my other components were fried as collateral damage????

What could remain fucking up? The Mobo, the processor, the Ram???

Can someone guide me through some better troubleshooting so I can pin point the issue, I have no access to any tech support, quarantine is at a heavy over where I live... I use my computer both to work and game and I had planned to change the system anyways, but I'm nowhere near having the money for that.

    Cpu: i5 - 7400 (2y old) Gpu: 1070 Gygabyte g1 gaming (1 y old) Mobo: Asus b150m-c (2 y old) Psu: XPG Core Reactor 650w gold (new)

Best build for a 1660 Ventus? ($750 CAD)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:03 PM PDT

Any suggestions for a build for my 1660 ventus oc? Have it in a prebuilt right now and plan on using it for the gpu in a new build soon. Would like to keep my budget around $750, although I would imagine that with already owning a GPU, I wouldn't need to spend anywhere near that amount. Would like to future proof all the parts as much as possible and be able to play most AAA games 60 fps 1080p for as long as the card will allow me.

I also currently have the Phanteks eclipse P300 case as well. If I can build something half decent for less with this gpu I'll take it as well. Just want an all round decent build.

Should I wait the next gen GPUs to be out in order to buy a new GPU?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 02:14 PM PDT

I'm going to build a gaming PC and I want it to be future proof. I would buy a 2080 TI, but it seems that the new NAVIs from AMD are going to be really great and "cheap". Should I wait till the new GPUs from both AMD and Nvdia be out to start building?
