    Simple Questions - June 25, 2020

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Is Post-Build anxiety a thing?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:05 AM PDT

EDIT: THE FINISHED PRODUCT. SHE'S READY

Finished my build yesterday, will upload a photo later when its in place but this is my first build.Ive got 2 pre-builds in the past and never had this issue. It cost me £3900~ so was super careful.

Even though i've booted and used it for a couple of hours with no issue, im completely on edge and expecting it to burst into flames any moment or windows to corrupt or all the fans to explode.

Is this a normal thing with new pc builders or am i crazy.

The Build as ive been asked. This is close as i could make it on PCPP

    OH MY GAWD 144hz

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:45 AM PDT

Yesterday, I switched from a 60hz 16'' 1024x768 laptop screen to a 144hz 22'' 1920x1080 panel (on my new desktop). THE COLORS. I always put my brightness on high on my laptop, but when I do that on my monitor, my eyes start to burn. Everything is just so vibrant and bright (VA panel). Don't even get me started on the refresh rate. I'm pretty sure all of you can tell how I felt. The resolution increase in games just made everything feel stretched. It was normal and all, but having that larger display made everything feel extra thicc even though it was a normal resolution. The smoothness is unreal.

I know this is a stupid question and you guys probably are annoyed buy it but how much is the average build cost (to build it myself)?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:08 PM PDT

I mostly play the game Smite and i play it on keyboard and mouse on my Xbox and it would be pretty nice to own a Pc but i don't even know anything about it as my friend said he will build it for me because he's built them before. I'm just wondering what's the average price for nothing to extreme as i don't stream or anything like that.:)

I just ordered the parts for my first own build PC!

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:15 PM PDT

I am excited and happy and can't quite comprehend how much money I just spent, even if my bank account says I can clearly afford it. I don't think I have ever spent such a large batch of money outside of getting a car.

Also scared I am gonna mess up building it, but seems doable. Let's hope I don't mess it up. Never actually built my own PC.

So much thought and research went into this and this honestly was really really fun already up until this part. Still kinda scary.

Don't really have anywhere else to share :)

    Parts for anyone curious:

    https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/YY8xJb

Edit: Also for soem reason pcpartpicker is kinda finicky with price. I payed 1374 shipped ordering everything off of Mindfactory (and man ordering on mindfactory alone made me reminisce about Wc3 :) )

Graphics card made scratching noise as I put it in, am I fucked

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:37 AM PDT

I put the graphics card in and scratching noises happened, I noticed some dust at the end of my card which was probably from the slots. Is it broken? And im taking a long ass time building this so I cant test by booting up.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

So happy to have built my 1st PC!

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:56 AM PDT

I have been a laptop user ever since, and this would be my 1st time building a PC. As a 33 year old I don't have much knowledge about it, just spent time watching youtube videos and browsing reddit asking for advice.

It's so sweet to build your own! Would love to share my build

    Build:

    AMD Ryzen 3 3100

    MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX AM4 Micro-ATX Motherboard

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER OC 4GB

    WD Green 240GB 3D NAND M.2 SSD

    Kingston HyperX FURY RGB 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz

Antec NX400 ARGB Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX Case - Black

With all the time, i've been playing dota 2 at 30 fps. Tested now and I am clocking at 120 fps, and it so much different.

New build keeps shutting down during intensive games!

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:48 PM PDT

Hi Folks, hope you are all keeping well during these strange times. I hope this is the correct forum for this question?

I would just like to start and say that this is my first ever Reddit post and I've only just built my first gaming PC with the help of friends over video chat, so please bare with my less than extensive knowledge :).

I was offered a good deal from a friend where I got an I7 7700k, z270f mobo, 8gb DDR4 Ram, 250gb SSD and a Corsair case for £150, so I jumped at the chance. I did a tonne of research on the bits and Bob's to buy and started the build, with a lot of help from friends. All I bought was the GPU, PSU and cooler - all new.

Though now I'm having an issue, where if there is any stress on my system it seems to unexpectedly shut down. I completed the build about 3 weeks ago, experienced no issues - though I was playing less demanding games such as Ori, Rocket League and Shogun 2. Then I got Destiny 2 and that's when the problems started. I will play for maybe 15 minutes and then the PC will suddenly shut down. I changed the settings to medium, shut down again. I turned off any overclocking on the CPU - shut down. I've carried out stress tests on the CPU all temps were fine, I stress tested the RAM and no issues. Then I stressed the GPU via Heaven with a NZXT overlay on, CPU RAM and GPU temps and percentages were completely fine ( A tech experienced mate was watching via video chat) then the system shut down again. I'm wondering whether this is perhaps a faulty PSU? Or could it be something else? I had a look at Event Manager thing and couldn't see anything obvious, though it might not have been obvious to me.

I hope you guys can help out, any advice is greatly appreciated.

    My set up is:-

Intel I7 7700K CPU, EVGA Twin fan RTX2060 GPU, Asus Strix z270f motherboard, Be Quiet Dark Rock 4 air cooler, 250GB Crucial SSD, Crucial 8gb DDR4 2133mhz RAM, Corsair 510 Case with 3 case fans fitted, Seasonic 650w 80+ Gold PSU

I was hoping to get more RAM and Storage this month as I was concerned with the amount of RAM I currently have.

Hope you folks can help. Apologies if I dont reply straight away.

    Building a PC for parents

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:50 AM PDT

My parents have always shared a PC, mom works on it (email, M Office, web) and watches movies while my dad only uses it for internet browsing. Right now they have this old HP Pavilion with Windows Vista that sucks ass, I've come to visit and asked to use it, it's slow, REALLY SLOW. HDD is full, they bought external hard drives for pictures and other documents, but still, it's slow and mom spends a lot of time sitting in front of it. So I decided to buy and build a new one before I leave.

Needs are reliable, durable for 10+ years (as the one they have has), silent, easy to store and access data and not expensive (800€ with monitor, keyboard and mouse). One last request from mom is that the monitor isn't tired to the eyes since her vision is not the same as it used to. AMD integrated graphics with an ultrawide screen is the way to go. She uses several windows at the same time and is always toggling around, in addition, watching movies and shows at 21:9 would be a plus for her since she has a 20" monitor.

The PCpartpicker list might not be the best in your region, I'm buying in Spain and the things listed might not be the cheapest in your region and some retailers aren't even listed in the website, this is just so you get a rough idea. Right now, my main question is, will the processor be able to handle a monitor like the LG29WK600-W? Will the included HDMI 1.4 of the mobo be enough and would it be possible to even get a 1444 ultrawide display (budget would increase 100€-200€, I don't mind paying extra for the amount of time she spends with the PC, especially with the pandemic situation) and run it or is it overkill?

Thank you guys for your help and advice

    Weird internet situation

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:12 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

So recently I discovered that the "Ethernet" port I was going to use in my wall is actually a port for a phone. I also don't really have the money to upgrade to a WiFi enabled board or get a WiFi chip. However, I may have another solution. A while back I was having major internet connection issues for my Xbox. Decided to get what I would currently describe as a WiFi enhancement system (don't quote me on that, I totally forget what it's called). Basically the product is an Orbi, if you've ever heard of it. The main box plugs into the router and sends a signal to the other box, which basically solved my connection issues. The box is wired to the Xbox through an ethernet cable. The PC will be my main source of gaming now, so my plan is to just hook up the box to the PC. I'm guessing this will work just fine but wanted to make sure so that I didn't end up needing an WiFi adapter.

    PC randomly shuts off

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:12 PM PDT

I've recently upgraded my old PC and basically rebuilt it with new parts. Worked fine the past 4 months, now has a reoccurring issue where at completely random intervals it will shut off and I am not able to reboot it unless I follow these steps (which I find very bizarre)

    1) Switch off psu 2)Unplug power cable from pc 3)Unplug power cable from outlet 4)Wait a few minutes 5)Plug everything back in 6)Switch on psu

And then my PC has power again and will boot. I can tell when this works because my motherboard has some leds in it and when it randomly shuts off the led goes out completely. As soon as I run through those steps the led comes back on.

I've checked temperatures and my CPU is not overheating, so at this point I'm wondering if its either a bad psu or bad wiring in my house? I've moved the PC to different locations and eventually the same issue arises. I guess my main question is, is there a way to test the psu before I drop $ on a new one? And would it be a good idea to get an electrician to maybe check the wiring of the outlet I'm plugged into?

    Any help is appreciated!

Hello everyone. Over the past two months I have been trying to build my first PC. If you wish to help, bear with me while I recount my confusing journey.

Last week, I finally got all my parts, minus the SSD, together and decided to test Mobo, CPU, GPU, RAM and PSU. Got everything connected and nothing happened except the little RGB on the Mobo flashes. The PSU fan doesn't even spin. I don't own any other parts to try and determine which parts work except for an old PSU (from a 10+ year old Intel pc - my new puild is AMD). I switch out the PSUs and happily it posts! BIOS loads up and everything. I was very excited and concluded the PSU was DOA. I returned it to the store no problems, but couldn't get the same PSU and had to order a different one. This took a week or so.

Today, got my PSU (in the meantime got my SSD as well) and fit everything into the case, thinking I had solved all hardware issues. However as soon as I connect everything the new PSU always fails. No fan spinning. Just that quick flash of the Mobo. This time I had a keyboard plugged in and its light also comes on. I try the other PSU and now it fails me...This time I search for PSU troubleshooting and find out about a paper clip trick to see if your PSU works. Unplug the PSU and test it. The PSU fan comes on and it appears to work. (actually tested both new and old successfully) Two things occur to me, first my first PSU I bought last week probably would have successfully tested with the paper clip and second I am assuming something is wrong with my motherboard.

I am using the Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO WIFI (rev. 1.0) ATX AM4 Motherboard.

Any tips or tricks are welcome before I disassemble the build in order to return the Mobo.

Thanks for reading all the way through.

TLDR; after successfully posting with an old PSU once last week, I now can't get it working with any PSU.
