Can we just have a moment to talk about how awesome power supplies are?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 12:06 PM PDT

I'll go through 800$ of graphics cards in 5 years and I'll still have my seasonic power supply that keeps chugging power. Like a 5 year warranty is pretty cool and they go on for later. And their only like 100$. Power supplies are like that friend that you don't talk a lot to but is always there to chat or hang out.

10 year Mac user making the switch. AMD build for graphic design/music production workstation with 144hz 1440p gaming/streaming abilities.

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 08:24 PM PDT

Hey guys. I'm a long time Mac user who is finally making the switch. My 2015 iMac 21.5" is beginning to show its limitations with CPU bottlenecks when using Logic Pro, and occasional holdups on Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign and I wanted to get away from Apple this time around, as well as break into some PC gaming for the first time.

    Here is my build: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/B6Wgf9

I've spent a ton of time researching and trying to find a compatible build that is versatile and powerful for my needs. I'm kind of just jumping into this feet first and admittedly there are a bunch of gaps in my knowledge, so I'm hoping to get feedback on whether this build is viable or suggested.

If there are some parts you feel could be swapped for cheaper alternatives or compromises that would be more cost effective that would be great. The current list is $2983.38 CAD +tax which is pretty steep, but I'm also hoping this rig lasts me so I don't mind making a decent investment. Keep in mind that I am located in Canada and I have limited options.

I should mention that I already have a monitor that is great for design work, so the monitor on my list would be strictly for gaming performance.

    Thanks!

edit: sorry to strike up a conversation and then go AWOL. I fell asleep shortly after posting and now I'm at work. I will do my best to respond on lunch. Thanks for all the helpful responses!

First PC Build for teenage son

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 11:57 AM PDT

Hello All! My teenage son wants to get or build a PC to play Rainbow, Fortnite, Valorant, etc.

He has a 144hz monitor, gaming mouse and keyboard, and needs a PC that can keep up with it.

Our first option was buying this prebuilt PC, but he was hoping for 'better' than this. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-5-3600-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-super-1tb-solid-state-drive-black/6360131.p?skuId=6360131

Secondarily, we looked at this parts list https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bw37b8

We do have three PCs in the ~5 years old range, including one with a radeon 6870 that used to be quite decent, but he really insists he needs something amazing to 'run the game smoothly' and at 'eleventy jillion frames' or some such :-)

I built one PC many years ago, and will hopefully building this one as well, so please keep that in mind. Any tips you have or help for us will be hugely appreciated!

    Thank you!

Gpu fans not spinning, no display

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 01:39 PM PDT

My pc has been working fine for the last two years. Suddenly I've gotten two BSOD errors. Then yesterday, I tried turning the pc on and it'll start up but no display comes on. The GPU fans spin for like 10 seconds then stop spinning.

I tried booting up with my built in graphics (Ryzen 5 2400g), but that didn't work either. I'm thinking it's the mobo or the power supply. When i turn the pc on, the rgb on my mouse flickers and then nothing else happens. The rgb on my keyboard won't turn on period. Any ideas what the issue might be?

    Thanks for the help.

    1440p vs 4k at 27inch?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:32 PM PDT

I am just confused as to what to get like I really want to upgrade my 24inch monitor and I need a dual setup anyways. Should I go for 1440p or 4k? I am not going to be doing editing or photo work or playing games in 4k. The reason I have 4k on the list is to maybe future proof it like if I buy now then I am not going to upgrade for the next 7-8 years like idk. Please help me select that even if I get 1440p then will it last longer. Again I am not a hardcore gamer but I do game but my main purpose for using these monitors would be productivity and learning but I will also watch like videos in youtube. Secondly, find me good deals because I was surfing the web and seriously every monitor I liked was out of stock. Is it because of COVID-19 that business have shutdown so should I wait for like a month or so when they start to bring out the new monitors? Thanks

Is it safe to bring built PC (Medium-size tower) along a 12-hour drive?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 07:31 AM PDT

I'm driving 12 hours tomorrow for a 3 week vacation at my mom's place and I cannot decide if it's safe or even worth it to bring my PC, as I'm nervous of fucking up or bending the pieces. Thoughts?

PC turns on but no output to monitor

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:13 PM PDT

I'm sure this is a common question but from my research I can't find an answer. This is my first build but from what I can tell all fans are spinning, my gpu fans are spinning and the motherboard lights turn on. I plugged my HDMI into my GPU. Any suggestions for me?

    Chair Recommendations?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 12:28 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I tried posting this in learn programming but it was removed, hopefully this counts, if anyone has anywhere else they'd recommend posting I'm all ears.

I'm about halfway through coding boot camp, and currently it's gone completely virtual and I've been working from home near 12 hours a day. I bought a chair at Costco months ago that seemed decent enough for prolonged work (few hours maybe) but I've been having serious lower back pains that have been triggering major tension headaches.

I just got off the phone with my doctor and he recommended a sit stand desk which I currently have (but have been under utilizing) and to stand as much as possible during the day.

But he did recommend to invest in a proper chair now to avoid future problems if this is a career path that I'm considering which I definitely want to stay on.

I've been doing a bunch of research and I'm seeing proper chairs that range from $400-$1400 and I'm just trying to see what the benefit to cost ratio is and what you guys would recommend.

I've seen a Verte 202 chair that looks like it does a great job at providing full spinal support but costs up to a whopping $1,400

And I've seen people rave about herman miller chairs that can go from $400-$600.

I'm 6'5" and I'm not a stranger to back issues so I'd rather invest the proper money now than pay for MRI's and chiropractors down the line.

Thanks for all and any input.

Should I just Return My Parts?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 06:18 PM PDT

So my Xbox barely works and I want to switch to PC gaming, so I recently started buying parts for a new build. However, after reading a bunch of Reddit posts on here, I feel like me building my PC right now is just dumb. Should I just return all my stuff, is there any way I won't just be wasting money by building a PC right now?

EDIT: someone said I should include my parts list

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yNHPk6

EDIT (again): thank you all so much for the helpful comments, you've given me some hop again for my PC build!

Recommended SSD for old laptop, Light grand parent use?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:31 PM PDT

Recently i was asked to fix up a 2014 era laptop, Overall it is running quite well however the current HDD is quite slow causing it to take 5+ minutes to boot causing me to think of just swapping it out cause turns out it is just 1 screw on the back, 2 screws and the hdd is completely out. It supports 7MM drives.

I am not that familiar with SSD line ups anymore so i don't know what would be best, Usage would be very light just web browsing and similar, For that i believe a 240GB would be more then enough. Any recommendations would be appreciated, Thank you for your help.

(Somewhat) future-proof gaming cum workstation build

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 10:53 AM PDT

I decided to go with a 2nd gen Ryzen 2700x instead of a 3rd gen to exploit being able to use an older motherboard. x570 motherboards are really overpriced in Indian amazon right or straight up not available. I figure a slightly slower CPU for gaming is more than made up for by going for RTX 2060 Super. Gotta get that ray tracing. Plus I could definitely use the extra 2 cores for programming and video editing.

    https://in.pcpartpicker.com/list/LHQTf9

Let me know what you dudes think. This is my first build and I've just started seriously thinking about this, so I am totally willing to go back to the drawing board as much as necessary. All feedback is super welcome!

Edit: Alright m'dudes, I'm heading to bed. Thanks for everyones input. I'll probably read the rest of the responses tomorrow.

What's the cheapest case/bench I can possibly get?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Title. Don't even care about front usb/audio, literally just needs to be something that holds the components. Basically I want the next upgrade from a literal cardboard box.

This is the cheapest I have right now (£18): https://www.ebuyer.com/872182-eg-mn25-micro-atx-gaming-case-egxs001 but it clearly has some of the aforementioned features which must cost some money.

    Anyone have any leads?

    Case and cpu cooling

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 02:50 PM PDT

So I recently built a pc at the end of May, (this was my first ever build) and didn't learn until afterwards that the case I bought has no preinstalled fans which is a huge problem. I've got a Ryzen R5 cpu and am currently using the stock cooler that comes with that. My cpu temp currently sits around the mid 70s (°C) while running games. Wanted some possible suggestions for case fans and fan/liquid cpu cooling. If my full build list is needed to help I will post in comments.

    3600 vs 3700x?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 02:49 PM PDT

On Benchmark these two CPU's appear to be very similar with regards to gaming speeds. I'm also interested music production (Ableton) and coding. Is it worth my while getting the 3700x or should I save the 100 euro and go for the 3600?

    GPU Underperforming

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 02:22 PM PDT

Every time I turn my computer off my GPU starts to underperforming. If I press the reinstall drivers button in the GeForce experience it doesn't help. I have to download them from the internet manually and install them to get my GPU to perform how it should. I have no clue what I can do to fix this problem.

Added 2x 8GB 3200mhz Ram and the Memory Speed Dropped to 1866

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 02:20 PM PDT

    I recently added 2x 8GB 3200mhz ram to my existing 2x 8GB 3200mhz ram

All 4 sticks are G SKill Ripjaw Series 5 3200mhz

When I was running just 2 sticks with the DOCP profile activated I was able to get the full 3200mhz

When I added the additional sticks my speed dropped to 1866mhz

Is that normal? How can I speed the memory back up. Also upon booting the system seems to fail a couple of times. It powers on then turns off 2 times before continuing to boot.

    Does anyone have any advice?

My new pc's CPU doesn't work

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 02:13 PM PDT

So when I turn on the pc the fans start spinning on the gpu and CPU cooler but I don't get video output and there is a red led (debug light I think) that turns on that shows that there is something wrong with the processor. I tried reconecting the CPU power but that didint work, I tried taking out the gpu but that also didint help. I'm new to pc building and I'm scared that I might have broke something. Sorry for formatting btw.

Does this motherboard support the RAM?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:46 PM PDT

Hi, i was thinking about getting the asus motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING H470-PRO WIFI, Socket 1200. It says that it only supports up to 2933MHz on the site but it does also say that it supports XMP profile. Does anybody know if it would be able to support 16GB DDR 3200MHz and if i would be able to use the 3200MHZ or if it only goes up to 2933MHZ?

Today I Learned Not To Over tighten CPU Screws

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 09:26 PM PDT

Since I bought my 8700K back in 2018, my GPU (GTX 1070) was stuck running at PCI x4 3.0. Today, I decided to try and loosen the screws on my EK water block instead of being all the way down. Lo and behold, it went to x16 after that. I wish I had a picture to show how stupid I looked. I picked up 10-20 FPS in most games, and jumped to the 100th percentile for the GPU in Userbenchmark (up from 83rd). If you'll excuse me, I'm going to bang my head into the wall.

[UK] Recommendations on monitors. Preferably wall mountable and with multiple hdmi sources for outside consoles.

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:39 PM PDT

I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes down to it, but at the moment, I'm still saving but thought it's better to replace the tv on my wall with a monitor that's better.

I don't have much room, so it needs to be wall mountable, and I use my Nintendo switch and I'm hoping to hook up a small raspberry pi for projects and my ps4 for entertainment.

I'd prefer a higher resolution monitor where possible but would rather sacrifice resolution for convenience.

    Thanks.

What should I upgrade in my PC

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:39 PM PDT

Looking to upgrade my PC, got a 240hz monitor and would like to be able to run most of my games at 240+frames (league, overwatch, apex, valorant) most are at 180. If I upgrade my CPU I'd also have to get a new mobo, what do you guys think I should do? I mostly game but I occasionally like to do some video editing and rendering.

    my specs:
    Intel core i7 6700K @ 4.00GHz

    32.0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1199MHz
