This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Make sure you heat up your thermal paste before removing your CPU cooler.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 09:25 PM PDT

Ryzen processors have a thing with being pulled off with the cooler if the thermal paste is not hot enough and this could potentially damage your CPU pins. Leave a game running or a CPU stress test to get the temperatures higher and then remove the CPU cooler to make sure it doesn't stick.

Question about warranty on PSUs [Don't upvote]

    Posted: 09 May 2020 09:56 AM PDT

If I buy a used PSU and it fails within it's 10 year warranty can I send it in or would I need original proof of purchase?

EDIT: After reading through most of the major factories info they say warranty is not transferable.

Also buying a PSU right now sucks ass. I just need this and a nice M.2 and I can get to building. RIP

$1000 Gaming (No Streaming) first build advice

    Posted: 09 May 2020 11:29 AM PDT

This is my first build, and I wanted to get some advice on my current build and make sure nothing is obviously wrong.

I'm going for around the $1000 mark and am planning to use it for gaming (not planning on any streaming).

Here's the link to my current parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/jedaniels000/saved/D6wnLk

    B450 Max + Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 09 May 2020 11:59 AM PDT

Sorry for the newbie question but I'm fairly sure I'll be buying an msi b450 max with a ryzen 5 3600. On MSI's site it says that the b450 max supports 3rd gen ryzen. Does this mean I won't have to flash the bios?

Not the best, but it's mine.

Still waiting on 2, 1tb nvme to arrive, but I can begin now.

Don't mind the background, working on the office where the PCs are going. I've had that Logitech G13 gameboard thing for years now and never opened it. I wonder if I'll ever really use it...

Oh, for the PSU...have that Corsair I can take from an old machine (built this for my sis years ago and she never used it) or use the Seasonic Focus GM-650 (rebranded PLUS gold? Anyone know)?

I need to put a 2nd (less powerful) together for my wife, but glad I can wait on that one for a little bit.

    Enjoy your builds!

-edit- I'm just going to recycle old cases since they are huge. I can throw this in the black CM or the white Stryker. Neither are as sexy as some of the newer cases out. Black or White? Room is probably white/dark Navy.

Troubleshoot Upgrade/new build - GPU broken?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 09:32 AM PDT

    Hi folks.

I recently built a new pc with the following specs; PC parts.

I used the GPU, optical drive and PSU off of an old pc, all other components new. When turning the PC on all fans work perfectly fine (including GPU), but I cannot get anything to display on the monitor - Using HDMI cable. The monitor also definitely works as I use it every day for work with my Mac.

Do you know if the GPU is broken or how I might test this?

edit: 'boot' led is showing on mobo

Going nuts on a threadripper build - I'm stuck on selecting memory.

    Posted: 09 May 2020 12:07 PM PDT

Beginning a new career that's been requiring me to be running a few concurrent VMs and doing some heavy duty processing while still wanting to be able to game on the side. I've decided to go with a ridiculous 3970x threadripper build with a an asus zentih ii extreme alpha board.

Memory has been my big sticking point. I'm a longtime pc builder and hobbyist overclocker, but I've been out of the loop for a few years and new to the amd scene.

I've learned that the ryzen line is supposed to be preferential towards lower latency memory than higher memory clock speeds. I also understand that once we pass the 1800mhz base memory clock that the infinity fabric causes higher latency to occur as it applies a 2:1 ratio.

So for a system that I'm already investing a decent amount of money in and intend to overclock moderately (a daily overclock, nothing record setting) what should I be looking at in terms of ram? I have 8 banks available and I'm shooting for 8x16gb sticks.

At the moment I'm strongly eyeing the gskill trident z neo 3600 with the 16ns latency. I've also considered the 14ns 3200 memory (either gskill or corsair vengeance, which I think both use the Samsung b die) or moving up to some corsair dominator.

I'm interested in hearing any debate about brands, but first I'm confused on the speed vs latency issue. I have a general understanding that larger sized modules will yield higher latencies, though I'm not sure if raiding the memory speed also ends up impacting latencies.

From looking at reviews, I'm seeing that even a 14ns 3200 kit overclocked to 3600 will underperform a 3600 native clock with 16ns latencies. Does that sound right? I get that all ddr4 memory is overclocked beyond their base speed and the higher speed chips are basically binned. Prices seem about the same for a 3200 14ns kit and a 3600 16ns kit (the lower latency kit is slightly more expensive) but that doesn't tell me much.

Tl;Dr recommend me some 16gb sticks that will give the best performance when paired with a 3970x and overclocked as high as is stable for a daily driver. Custom loop water cooking will be added to the cpu, vrm, and gpu. Not planning on adding water to the ram but I can if it's actually needed

Thanks Zotac and BAPC mods -- my 2M prize has arrived!

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:01 PM PDT

Hello r/buildapc! In the 2 million subscriber giveaway, my Monolith won the "Zotac backpack w/ goodies + jacket" prize in the all-rounder category, and the prize arrived today!

    https://imgur.com/a/g1aqsqR

I had figured that "goodies" meant some stickers and a flash drive, but it actually meant an umbrella, a baseball cap, a mouse pad, and best of all, a LEGO set block toy of Zotac's logo compatible with major brands of plastic construction bricks. Best piece of vendor swag I've ever gotten! The jacket is really nice, too, there's a windbreaker layer and a zip-out insulating liner.

    Just ordered a Ryzen 3300x

    Posted: 09 May 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Not super confident in my PC building skills but since I'm in bad need of an upgrade (on a budget) I decided to go ahead and order a Ryzen 3 3300x today. Now I'm a little stumped. From reading articles it sounds like my best bet is to wait for the B550 mobos to come out. Is that fair to say? I'm hoping to use my current SSD, GPU and power supply so I'm also on the lookout for RAM and possibly even a new GPU anyway.

As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Threadripper Gen 2 PC Build

    Posted: 09 May 2020 02:07 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I am in the process of building a new PC. Regrettably, I haven't kept up with part compatibility. Given that my current machine dates back to 2011 (!), the notion of mixing NVIDIA SLI and an AMD chipset is novel (yet fascinating) to me...

I have a PC Part Picker list here for you to peruse. The power supply is a carry over from my previous rig.

One thing I will point out is that I have some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste on hand, but from what I can gather, Kryonaut is a better choice for Threadripper. Can anyone confirm this? Kryonaut is only $14, but I'd rather use what I have to reduce waste where possible.

This build needs to be capable of a variety of workflows, including CAD (Solidworks, AutoCAD, Revit, Fusion360), video recording and editing (Panopto, OBS, etc.), simulation games (I have FSX Gold with a full complement of cockpit hardware, and plan to obtain FS2020 when it comes out). I have chosen a Threadripper 2950X rather than the Ryzen 3990X because of the number of PCIe Gen 4 lanes that I foresee will be needed, even though the TDP will be larger with a Threadripper. My only concern with this decision is that I know that I am buying a "dead" chipset since AMD has moved on to the TRX40 for their 3rd Gen components. Given my balance of workloads, I have also chosen to use a consumer GPU rather than a workstation GPU. I am driving 4 monitors with this setup, which is why I'm going with SLI in spite of already specifying a 2080TI.

I also intend to keep this build for as long as possible. My current machine is approaching 9 years old, and apart from some storage upgrades (it lived through the gradual transition to Solid State storage from HDDs) and a PSU replacement, it has served me well.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate any and all feedback.

    Rainbow Six 240fps on Low

    Posted: 09 May 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I'm aiming to a average of around 240fps on rainbow six siege on either low or medium. Just wondering if anybody will know if this is possible with the parts I'm aiming for. The parts are the Sapphire Nitro+ RX 5700 XT 8GB SE with a AMD Ryzen 7 3700x. Another small question I have about this is that I will be running a three monitor set up for multi tasking discord and other things, will this take away frames or will I be fine?

Questions about the Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI

    Posted: 09 May 2020 01:59 PM PDT

So I am making a build that is using the Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI motherboard.
First, I keep reading how this MB has a 8+4 power connection, where as most power supplies have 8+8. Any recommendation on what power supply to use? I really don't want to have an additional splitter cable in my case
Second, any recommendation for what CPU cooler to use (will use the i7-9700k in a meshify c case)? I was going to go with the noctua nh-d15, but I am concern it will interfere with the ram. Thank you!

First PC build, will this last me 4+ years

    Posted: 09 May 2020 01:54 PM PDT

After about three months of research, I think I'm finally going to bite the bullet and start ordering parts. Part list below.

PC will be used mostly for gaming, light work, and possibly streaming. I'm looking to do minor upgrades throughout the years and hoping these components will last me at least three to four years and still be able to play all major games without issues.

Willing to spend a bit more on GPU if it's beneficial in the long run. Yes, I know I could save on the fans and cpu cooler, but RGB played a factor in the final look i want.

Thoughts? Any major flaws with any of the parts i selected?

    Thanks!

Energy efficient Hardware Platform for a NAS?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 11:15 AM PDT

Im looking to built a Energy Efficient NAS i can place at the flat a relative of mine lives in. This is used as a offsite backup so i can follow the 3-2-1 backup rule.

Since i dont want to raise the power bill to much(even if i pay for the power used). So i want to keep it energy efficient.
Since it is a NAS i also want to go with ECC RAM.

I was wondering what Architecture you would recommend.
I thought about a new ryzen CPU but im not sure about the ECC compatibility.

I want to keep this as cheap as possible without cheaping out on PSU and co. So maybe around 300€ without Case and drives.

    Note: i hope this
