This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

The R3 3300X release has really opened my eyes to the fact that 4 Core / 8 Thread CPUs are still perfectly viable for gaming in 2020.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 06:04 AM PDT

I really doubt they'll hold up well in the future when the new consoles release, but as of now there is very little performance to be had going from a 3300X to a 3600 for gaming. You could grab a B550 + 3300X now, and upgrade to 4th gen when games start needing 6 cores. I think I'll be holding onto my old 4C/8T i7 for a little longer.

Don’t be like me - check your clock speeds for RAM

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:26 PM PDT

I feel like this could benefit someone out there. I'm a first time PC builder as of last September, and have I learned a lot since then. It's not a monumental blunder, but man, I should have checked my clock speeds for my RAM.

Since September, my RAM - which is DDR4-3000 - has had no XMP profile and because of this, has operated at 2133 MHz for close to a year now. I noticed that some games were maybe not getting as much FPS as I would have expected with a build like that.

So, I chose XMP profile 2 in the BIOS - simple enough - and now I have my speed at 2933 MHz, which is basically as it is advertised.

First time builders, make sure to consider this if you're making your PC! Use that money you spent on the RAM - I sure wasn't.

EDIT: Please make sure your CPU can handle it before you do anything with the XMP profiles.

22 Years Since First Build, 7 Years Since Last Build - A memory lane post

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:15 AM PDT

Wow... I love stepping away (I swore I'd never build another) and then coming back. I think everything I hated about PC building is almost gone (mostly the god-awful driver issues).

My last build was cobbling together used stuff on a new-yet-old Socket 775 mobo.

I'm posting so you can have a laugh at my ignorance.

    1. This new-to-me M.2 interface is brilliant. Which means...
    2. We're FINALLY done with cables to drives (for humble users like myself). Which also means...
    3. Modular power supplies. Seriously... why did it take so long? Especially since I only used 3 of the 423 cables spewing forth. Great.
    4. Heatsink mounting with screws. I sure will miss the spring clamp that you had to get on a hidden tab whilst trying not to snap the mobo in half. OMG that was a painful nightmare.
    5. My first MOBO without any floppy or ATA ribbon cable connectors. How much room does that alone save?
    6. 90mm CPU fans! Yeah! My 266mhz Intel didn't even need one. The tiny ones afterwards were, well, tiny and kinda' annoying.
    7. So little to buy! No sound card, modem card, LAN, floppy, CD, HDD, GPU. The level of integration (or omission) is fantastic.
    8. Those tiny PCI slots are adorable relative to to ISA monsters.
    9. 100% jumperless mobo. I remember when they were reduced. But I had a MOBO where they're entirely gone.

What still remains, 22 years later, that totally baffles me.

    I need some gpu help.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:00 AM PDT

    My current specs: Ryzen 7 3800x 16gb ddr4 3600mhz ram Evga 6gb 1060 sc

    (I play 1440p on a 60fps monitor)

I'm looking for a gpu and I have multiple options I dont know which is best.

    1) I can wait for the next nvidia and amd gpus and buy one of them. But when will they be on the shelves and ready to buy? I'm impatient and my 1060 is struggling with 1440.

    2) by my friends 4 year old 1070 and again wait, but I dont think it's worth it as 100 quid now and then another 400 odd down the line probably isnt a great idea.

    3) I could either buy a 2070super or a RX 5700XT now. But I've heard they wont age very well with all the software and new stuff coming out over the next months and years, but then again it immediately gives me over 60fps 1440p high settings and that sounds great.

    What would you do? Thanks.

All White and Black Build Complete

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:21 PM PDT

    White and Black Build

Just finished this black and white themed build for a friend. I started this parts list for him months ago when he said he needed a computer for beginner video editing. I set out a plan and with my around $800 budget I started working on this beauty. It's completely absent of RGB and packed with quality parts. It has a Ryzen 5 1600 af on the Gigabyte DSH3 B450M motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 3600 mhz Crucial Ballistix RAM, a WD Black SN750 250GB m.2 NVMe SSD, a 2TB Seagate Barracuda, an MSI GTX 1660 Super Ventus XS OC edition, 5 Shadow Wings 2 from be quiet!, sleeved black and white cable extensions from asiahorse, and a 500w evga BQ PSU powering it. All of this hardware is inside darkflash's DLM 21 case.

Parts took a while to ship due to the pandemic but when they finally all arrived I could not wait to throw this together. I think it turned out better then I thought it would. Let me know what you think!

Looking for feedback for my first build

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:53 PM PDT

    Hi there!

I've never built a PC and have only been able to have gaming laptops due to a small living space. But I'm ready to make it work and build a PC and let the laptop become my wife's Sims 4 machine.

I tend to game in phases and will play a pretty wide variety of games from indy titles like Stardew to AAA titles like Borderlands as well as some VR, but right now am spending most of my gaming hours on WoW Classic. I know this is overkill for most of what I play, but I want something that's gonna last me 3-5 years before I need to think about upgrading.

Here's what I've come up with after some research:

    CPU Ryzen 5 3600 https://www.newegg.com/amd-ryzen-5-3600/p/N82E16819113569?Item=N82E16819113569 $172
    Motherboard MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F7W5KJS/ref=twister_B07ZHY844C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 $115

Storage Crucial MX500 2.5" 500GB SATA SDD (will add HDD for extra storage later on) https://www.newegg.com/crucial-mx500-500gb/p/N82E16820156173?Item=N82E16820156173 $70
Video EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 KO Ultra https://www.newegg.com/evga-geforce-rtx-2060-06g-p4-2068-kr/p/N82E16814487486?Item=N82E16814487486 $319
    Case DIYPC https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16811353172?Item=N82E16811353172 $46
    Power Supply CORSAIR - CX-M Series 650W https://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-cx-m-series-650w-atx12v-2-4-eps12v-2-92-80-plus-bronze-modular-power-supply-matte-black/5845214.p?skuId=5845214 $95
    Monitor Samsung - CRG5 24" curved https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-crg5-series-24-led-curved-fhd-freesync-monitor-black/6395561.p?skuId=6395561 $198
    Keyboard Corsair K55 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-k55-wired-gaming-membrane-keyboard-with-rgb-backlighting-black/5707081.p?skuId=5707081 $50

I have a mouse that's still serviceable that I'll stick with for now.

Anything you'd do differently? I wouldn't mind bringing the total down a bit closer $1000 without too much sacrifice, if at all possible. I considered an AMD GPU, but would like to know that what I'm getting is going to be stable without a lot of work needing to be put in for that stability.

VR capable is important to me as I do play VR somewhat regularly using my WMR headset.

I'm not sure if this is just getting by for a quality, future-proofed (lol) PC, or if this is overkill.

    Thanks!

edit: Apparently need the Tomahawk MAX

Building a PC for code streaming - thunderbolt video out

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:23 PM PDT

Hi fine reddit folks, I was thinking of building a desktop PC for streaming code, as my MacBook 13 inches is not that great for that.

I've a budget of 600£ and the only catch is that I need to have a Thunderbolt port out, since my monitor only has that (I have one of these https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/HMUA2B/A/lg-ultrafine-4k-display). I saw that there's a few thunderbolt card that might be good, but I honestly I'm too unfamiliar with that. A friend of mine told me that they only work with intel cpus, and I was looking at AMD processors.

Any suggestion for a setup? The only other thing I'd like is to have at least 32gb of RAM :)

Not sure if this mattes much, but I'm currently using a Canon EOS 650d for video input (mostly for zoom) via USB, I'm getting a capture card soon.

Gonna build a nice rig at the end of the year and give my budget rig to my youngest sibling. I think it could use a mild upgrade or two before I give it to her. Any ideas?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:02 PM PDT

    Current specs : i3-6100

    Biostar H110MH PRO D4

    Sapphire Nitro RX480 OC

    Hyper X 2133 8 GB single stick DDR4

This is my budget build I made in 2016. Haven't felt the need to upgrade as I was playing on a 1080p60 TV and it ran everything I played wonderfully. Then I bought a 1440p 144hz monitor when i redid my room, now I'm itching to bump up to high end specs. This rig will go to my little sister, who mainly will play 12 year old kid games and maybe some AAAs as she inevitably gets hooked on PC gaming.

Looking at this build, is there anything obvious I should upgrade before sending this baby to its next life? I have several months before I actually pull the trigger on a new rig, so I too will enjoy the upgrades until then. Thinking a max budget of $200. Not afraid to buy used components, although from here I think the only thing I would actually find used is a CPU and I don't know what a reasonable upgrade would be on this motherboard. I just want her to get some use out of it for at least two years, and not have to do any of her own upgrades.

Side note, if I do replace several parts, do I have any chance of reselling them? I mean this rig is pretty old, who is buying an i3-6100 even for $40 bucks or so?

    Grab 2 more 8gb or replace with 2 x 16gb?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Title. As stock is low I cant buy the exact stick I have. I can find sticks with slightly higher speeds or a different CL but would like to keep it as close to possible.

That being said if issues wont present itself even if the speed or cl is different (still the same corsair vengeance) then I dont mind going that route.

But if its recommended I do keep it the exact same, is it worth replacing it for 2x16 or do you advise me to wait till I can grab the exact same ones?

    Thank you for your time.

First time building a gaming PC since 2011, please check my build.

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:10 AM PDT

As I said in the title, I have not built a gaming PC since 2011 and am trying to build a contemporary "don't have to lower the settings" good enough gaming PC in the 800 dollar range. I already have a spiffy, unused case that takes micro boards. That's pretty much the only constraint besides the price point and my complete disregard for lighting.

Edit: I wasn't sure at all if the cpu and the gpu were appropriate for an under 1000£, so if you have alternative components to suggest, please do!

    Beginner PC

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:29 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new at this but I've always been interested. I just never had the opportunity to build a PC until now. Below you'll find a build I did and I just want to know what you guys think. It's purpose is just for me to be able to play all the games I could never play as a kid since I grew up pretty poor. I'm a college student paying my own stuff but due to coronavirus tuition went down a bit so I'll have a little extra. Is this build enough to run games like GTA5, Skyrim/Fallout, and Minecraft at a decent FPS? I understand it is not a great deal so nothing fancy, I just want a stable 60 FPS with 1280x720 if possible and maybe some recent games at low settings. If there are any better suggestions cost/efficiency-wise, please I'd greatly appreciate it considering my budget isn't that high. Just trying to fulfill a childhood dream. Thanks in advance!

Help GF and I build our PCs! :D

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:16 PM PDT

    Hello all!

Two months into quarantine and my girlfriend and I decided to start working on two PC builds from scratch, both as a cool project for us to do together and as a future investment post quarantine and for overall better quality of life for both of us. She has already done all the research on parts and most of the basic information, but we are having some problems getting started. So where do we start? Any helpful advice and tips you can pass along would be greatly appreciated!

Some relevant information about us. We both have basic computer skills as we have grown up around them pretty much since kids. She can troubleshoot most issues or google well enough to figure out how to get something working. I have built computers before but haven't really done much hardware work on a desktop in about 15 years. This would be my girlfriends first built. Our budget is between 1k and 1.5k each for our respective desktop. She wants to use Linux and teach herself how to use it.

I am a professional poker player and I have considered streaming my play and analysis. I also used to play CS in the source days and would love to get back into gaming, especially with the quarantine happening. I am teaching her how to play poker and she enjoys gaming as well and would like to get into streaming. So, both computers primary uses will be gaming and streaming in some form.

I already have a good gaming mouse, headphones and keyboard from my previous build, but I need to build the towers fresh and pick out good monitors, as well as hardware and such and I am not entirely sure which hardware and software is all compatible with each other which hardware is best for performance and price. We want to get the best bang for our buck without losing quality and want to avoid overpaying for unnecessary things just because we are overly excited.

Thanks again for reading. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

i think my mobo died, here for verification

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:56 AM PDT

Recently, i was using my pc and when i reached under my desk to plug in my phone charger, i accidentally unplugged my pc. It was a little frustrating but when i tried to turn it back on, it didn't and then i really got worried.

I built the pc, but i wouldn't consider myself qualified to diagnose this problem myself. I assumed it was the psu at first but then i did that paper clip test and the fan on the psu turned on. Then i noticed that when i plugged in the 24 pin into the mobo, and nothing else was plugged into the mobo besides the 24 pin, the cpu fan turned on. i plugged in the 8 pin for cpu power and tried turning it back on, but now the cpu fan won't turn on. I'm really worried the mobo is the problem now, as that can be more expensive. Am i right that the mobo died? or am i just missing something that could be a simple fix?

I shocked my case and my PC crashed

    Posted: 08 May 2020 11:56 AM PDT

It appears to be running fine afterwards, but why would that happen? Shouldn't the case absorb the shock without it getting to anything important? What do I need to do to make sure this doesn't happen again? Thanks!

Overclocking Corsair RAM to 3200 MHz on Aorus B450M MOBO

Stacked monitor stand for dual 43” screens

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:40 PM PDT

I'm having some trouble finding a desk stand that can stack two 43" screens.

Has anyone seen something of the sort? I'm having a tough time finding something that works. Doesn't need to articulate, but would prefer it to clamp onto the desk.

    Thanks in advance

Edit: Can be a stand instead of a clamp
