    Simple Questions - March 30, 2020

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 05:17 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

/r/buildapc 2 million subscriber giveaway - winners announcement!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:37 PM PDT

    Hello everybody!

Just over 3 weeks ago, /r/buildapc hit 2 million subscribers. To celebrate, we teamed up with a load of incredible hardware manufacturers and retailers to find the subreddit's best build stories and reward your efforts handsomely.

Since then, we've had thousands of entries - if nothing else, a global pandemic apparently gives you more time to be around your PC. We've seen builds made as early as 2011 still alive and kicking, detailed brand and game themed PCs, and even a literal toaster PC. It's been incredibly difficult for us to narrow these down, but after a great deal of time poring through and much deliberation, we are happy to reveal our winners. Congratulations!!!

First things first, congratulations to /u/Neosalicious whose brilliant microwave-encased build nets them the grand prize of a shiny new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti!

I’m fuming at how stupid I was buying a prebuilt.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:34 PM PDT

    1. I was young. Naive. Scared. Alone. I wanted a gaming computer, and didn't know what to buy. So my brother in law hooked me up, told me about a good pre built computer. So I bought it. $1500. I didn't know what specs were.

Fast forward to 2020, and I realize how badly I messed up. I paid $1500 for...

    Ryzen 5 1600 GTX 1060 8gb ddr4 1200mhz single channel ram

    Bruh...

So now I'm gonna build a PC. Hopefully it will be better.

Edit: mobile formatting is bad. The parts are... (Ryzen 5 1600) (GTX 1060 6gb) (8gb ddr4 single channel 1200mhz)

    Edit: that's... a lot of red/orange arrows...

    Alternative to "gaming" chair?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 03:41 PM PDT

So I know that a lot of the time "gaming" branded shit is overpriced for equal or worse quality, but I've been having trouble finding something meeting my needs. I'm looking for a desk chair that
    a) is big enough that I can curl up sideways in
    b) is tall-backed and with a headrest (I'm 6'1") and
    c) has good reclining options for when I want to play something with a controller or just watch a movie.
I'm aware this is ergonomically unideal and will probably lead to back pain later but I honestly don't give a shit; I want comfort now. I've sat in ergonomic chairs and had them adjusted properly and I just can't stay comfortable sitting straight up for any length of time no matter how well supported my back is so the ability to continually shift position is very important to me.

I'm currently looking at the Secretlab Titan as it fits all the criteria and the only non-gaming branded chair I've found that looks similar is the Ikea Markus but that seems like it'd be too skinny and it looks less comfortable to curl up in.

Are there any chairs I've overlooked or should I go with the Titan? Thank you!

GPU upgrade: 2070 Super, 2080 or wait for next gen?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 09:08 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my gpu from a 1060 to possibly the new RTX cards but I'm not sure which one. My primary goal is to be able to play most modern titles at 1440p 144hz. I know that each of the cards listed above can accomplish that, but which would be the best bang for the buck option?

I'm not restricted to those two cards, but I do want to stay team green. No hate towards AMD but I just prefer nvidia as I've never had any problems with them in the past.

I'm also debating if I should wait it out and see what happens with the new 3000 series cards but with all this Coronavirus stuff I'm not sure how long it's going to be before those cards actually come to market.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Should I get the HyperX Cloud II gaming headset?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 04:33 AM PDT

Hi all, pretty new to gaming here. Want to get a good headset I can use with both PC and PS4.

I see really good praise for the HyperX Cloud II but just wanted to see if it's overhyped?

At around this price point, is that the best headset or one of the best I can get?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

The motherboard refuses to boot with the XMP profile on the GSkill Ram. The xmp profile defines the ram speed as 3600, but upon setting the motherboard to boot with the profile, it either fails to post, in which case next boot will reset the bios, or it will boot with default settings.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    I have replaced:

The motherboard: twice, once with an ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero, and again with a replacement board of the same model as the board listed above

The ram: replaced with the same type of ram as listed above from amazon, I will have a replacement set from newegg in a couple days so I can try AGAIN, but i doubt it will change the situation.

    The CPU: replaced a Ryzen 7 3700x with a Ryzen 9 3900x listed above.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    Photos shouldn't be relevant.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Memory is slotted in A2 B2 slots as designated by the motherboard manual as being the more optimal slots for dual channel usage with only 2 sticks.

I'm not an overclocker, nor do i have much experience in doing so. The motherboard's bios comes with overclocking settings and I leave everything on 'auto'. The bios automatically clocks the CPU to 4.2GHZ (according to windows) and when i try to set the ram manually to 3600 it'll completely ignore that setting and set it to 2133. I should also mention that I can set it stable at 3066mhz just fine, but as soon as i breach that magic 3100mhz the PC starts dying.

Not planning on overclocking the CPU, but wanted to get the Corsair H100i water cooler anyway for the white build aesthetics, budget isn't really an issue. There's not much downside to water cooling is there? Other than being harder to set up. And I believe the Fractal Meshify C allows top mounting the radiator? Can someone tell me if I'm being stupid here?

I saw that for gaming NVMe SSD is probably not necessary compared to SATA? But at 2TB the Sabrent Rocket was cheaper than the Samsung EVO SATA anyway. So this is fine, right? And I likely don't need the PCIe 4.0 version?

GPU is going to be an old 1070 for now until the new GPUs come out this year, planning on getting the 3080 then.

Let me know if anything else looks questionable. Thanks in advance!

    PC hard crashing under load?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 07:28 AM PDT

My PC has just started to completely crash and reset when both the GPU and CPU are under a bit of stress.

It's been working perfectly fine for about 4 month but recently it doesn't seem to want to play anything.

I've checked the temps and they're both fine. I can't imagine how power consumption has suddenly gone up?

    Specs:

    Ryzen 5 3600

    RX5700

    18gb 3600mhz RAM

Corsair cx600 (Old model i beleive)

Edit: Looked to be a loose cable somewhere. Works after unplugging and plugging all the important connections

Edit: Problem started happening again, figured the only change i'd made was making battlefield v directx 12. Changed that back to 11 and it worked fine??? Directx 12 somehow managed to cause a shitload of problems

Three dysfunctional EVGA cards in less than 2 years; green XO artifacts?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 04:49 PM PDT

So I'll start off by showing the examples I have of my issue, and then I'll go into the story with full honesty.

Here are examples of my issue in various games

Here is the story: My first EVGA RTX 2070 card broke after a year. It randomly died and would not output video; fans ran at 100% constantly. Tested it in another computer and still broke.

I had it RMAd and received a new card from EVGA on the 19th of Janurary: the RTX 2070 XC ULTRA. This one after only a month of use suffered from visual artifacts. the Same green XO ones I am having today.

Yes, I ensured that the card was the issue. Putting my card into a friends build had the same results. Anyway, I had that card RMA'd as well much to my dismay. Since it was only a month after the card had arrived they waived my shipping fee and sent out my third GPU.

Like the last one, this one has artifacts (the examples I show above) except it happened within the first 3 days.

Yes, each of these cards was overclocked. I overclocked safely without crashes in the core department but I was made aware of something called ECC. Apparently my memory OC was much too high; around +1300MHz. Yet I heard nothing online saying you could permanently damage a card from a bad OC so I'm not sure. I have never touched the voltage slider for my GPU

As soon as I experienced artifacts (first time was watching Youtube) I shut off my OC completely and reset my BIOS yet the problem persists.

I won't try and lie here (I made a throwaway) but I'm really looking to get a refund for the card rather than another RMA. It is my hunch that the cards sent out to RMAs are refurbished and not actually brand new so I'm looking for any advice you guys have whether its

    1) fixing the card, 2) what to say to an EVGA RMA rep or otherwise, or 3) other options

Feel free to make fun of me if I made a dumb mistake.

Is GTX 1650 Super too good to be true?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:56 PM PDT

Howdy. I feel obligated to say that I'm kind of a novice and this is my first build. (also, sorry for formatting I'm on mobile)

With that out of the way, I'm currently researching graphics cards. My friend is helping me along the way and he found the graphics card mentioned in the title.

On B&H, the price is 159.99 USD. From what I've seen from footage and videos regarding it, it seems like it has great value. However, I have also read that it runs pretty loud.

Are there any other possible drawbacks? Is it to good to be true?

Can I have Ryzen 5 3600 with RTX 2070 super ? Or I need to have Ryzen 7 at least?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:19 PM PDT

One of my friends said I'd better get a 7th generation cpu because I have a high-end gpu.

Is it fine to have Ryzen 5 with this gpu or my friend is talking gibberish?

This will be my first build :)

Would this build fit with my goals?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 11:57 AM PDT

This would be my first time building a pc and im not sure if i am understanding everything correctly. the main purpose of this build would be playing paradox games like eu4, ck2, hoi4. but also to possibly play fallout 4 with mods. is my current build qualified for this or maybe even overqualified (doubt it). also if you see anything you would do different please tell me! thanks in advance!

How do you determine what kind of RAM DDR4 speed you need to work well with your CPU?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 10:19 AM PDT

I am currently making a dream/first gaming PC build on PCPartPicker and so far I have the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor, MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard, and EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB BLACK GAMING Video Card. I'm pretty new to this PC building stuff so I'm trying to learn more about it as I make my dream PC.

Edit: changed motherboard from the Asus PRIME B450M-A/CSM Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard to MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard and added graphics card.

About to impulsively build a PC because I’m salty my laptop can’t run Bannerlord, trying to get the best bang for my buck at around $750-800. Advice/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Been on integrated graphics for years, can’t wait to be able to play my old games again!!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 03:37 PM PDT

I've heard the 1660 super is a great deal for the price range I'm at, also heard good things about ryzen, but other than that I haven't built a pc since 2012 (rip to my first pc Darth Vader, he got absolutely fried in a lightning storm (I know lol)) so I'm a huge noob.

I'd like to play modern games on medium/high settings, maybe record some footage, but it doesn't have to be super high quality or anything. For the past three years I've been on integrated graphics and haven't been able to play like the majority of games I own on steam, so just being able to play them even on low would be super worth it. Honestly though I'd like to be able to run bannerlord at like 50-60 FPS on medium settings at 1080p so if I need better hardware for that lmk

I have all the peripherals and use two 2tb external hard drives for game storage (working with a 250gb ssd MacBook that I've partitioned and boot camped win10 onto), so I don't really feel like I need another HDD.

Anyway here's the parts list that I shamelessly plucked from someone's comment on another post here, lol.

If anything's a better deal or I'm overspending please let me know cause ya boy could really use the money right now (he says as he opens his wallet to buy a computer lol!). If you read this far then damn, I'm sorry for wasting your time, you coulda been reading something more interesting hahah

    PSU for RX 5700 XT

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 03:36 PM PDT

I was usually going to buy an RX 5600 XT aside with a Ryzen 3600. Therefore I ordered a 550W 80+ gold PSU. Due to some circumstances I switched to the RX 5700 XT Nitro+ from Sapphire. Now since the PSU is already here I asked myself if i should send the PSU back and replace it with a more powerfull one like a 650 or 750, since the Sapphire card is good for overclocking but uses a lot of power, or if I'm good to go.

    Some other Specs:

    • Only Air-Cooling (about 6 Fans)
    • Some RGB Lightning (Case, RAM, Wraith, Fans)
    • MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC Motherboard

    Thanks for any advices.

    CPU temp above 200 degree

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 03:26 PM PDT

Hey I wonder if I should stop monitoring my CPU temp. Ive build this PC like 1 month ago and I frequently look at my temperature with MSI afterburner everything seem fine unless some occasion (3 times now) Ive seen the max CPU temp have hit 200+°C. this morning for the first time I saw the graph when it spike too 207°C but the cpu usage was at 0%. My friend too a couple week ago saw 230°C with the program core temps. So I really don't know if I should just ignore it and stop looking my CPU temps ? Thanks you !

Need help with deciding PC parts for a build

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I've been running on an old pre built for roughly 5 years now and it's about time for an upgrade. Only issue is I don't have anybody to talk about PC parts. I've done a bit of research but I don't fully understand anything about PCs. My budget is roughly $1000 and I'm trying to get a PC that can run well for a couple years before it needs upgrading. The theme I'm going for is mostly white and black with a bit of RGB. All the other information can be found below.

CURRENT BUILD *I don't know most of the specs and I highly doubt I'll be salvaging anything from this PC
    CPU: AMD FX-43450
    Motherboard: GA-78LMT-USB3
    RAM: 8GB DDR3
Graphics Card: NVIDIA Geforce GT 730
Original link on Newegg (probably modified since 2015 but the same PC)
Not sure if it matters, but I average ~40 fps peak on low settings for Overwatch and Fortnite

    NEW BUILD
CPU: Intel Core i5-9600k for $160
Motherboard: MSI Z390 Gaming Edge for $185
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance RGB Pro for $95
Graphics Card: MSI GTX 970, getting from a friend
Power Supply: CORSAIR CX500M for $85
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken x53 for $130
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 2TB for $50
    Case: NZXT H500 for $70

The total for the new build costs roughly $780 which means I have about $220 to spare. If you're curious, I used NZXT Bld, PCPartPicker (until some parts were unavailable), Bitwit vids, LTT vids, and other similar PC building YouTube channels as influences to construct this build.

    Thanks for the help Reddit!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2020 12:48 PM PDT

Yesterday I built this PC (https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/hpkcCJ/great-amd-gaming-build) and after finishing I installed Windows 10 and my audio doesn't work. This is my first time building a PC and I am pretty sure I installed all the drivers and everything is up to date. My earbuds and headset are not being detected from both the front and back panels. Can anyone help me? If more details are needed please let me know.

edit: I just noticed that the link I sent does not match my parts. I can't find the original guide I used or that guide was edited. The correct parts are listed below. Sorry for the inconvenience.
