    Simple Questions - March 28, 2020

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I know this is a little off topic, but does anyone know where I can buy a webcam (US)?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 11:04 AM PDT

Seems hard to believe that every single site I can think to check is sold out. I found one or two on NewEgg that are shipping from China.... but that doesn't seem very plausible.

I know this isn't exactly the right sub, but I couldn't think where else to ask. Need one for my child's school, and I ordered one two weeks ago from Logitech (that said it was in-stock) but have gotten no updates response to any inquires. I suppose they are completely shut down. Thought I'd do better ordering directly from a big company... guess not!

At any rate, if you've got any ideas, I'd love to hear it. Thank you.

I have built a PC in the most drawn-out way possible, and it's now finished!

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 11:44 AM PDT

I started out in PC gaming back in 2015, when I moved in with a friend of mine, who let me use his old PC. When it wasn't up to snuff for the games I wanted to play, I went and bought one from iBuyPower at my local Fry's in 2016.

    Its specs were as follows:

Intel i5-6400 w/ stock Intel cooler

    MSI B150m PRO-VD motherboard

    8GB (2x4GB) 2133Mhz AData XPG DDR4 RAM

450w PSU (don't remember the brand)

    GTX 950 GPU

    1TB WD Blue HDD

    1 DVD R/W drive

Some proprietary case that time forgot

Now, after four years of upgrades, I have, in order of what I replaced,

    GTX 1070

    EVGA 600B PSU

    32GB (2x16GB) 3000Mhz Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM

    1TB WD Blue SSD

    500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD

    Corsair iCue 465x case

    Corsair Commander Pro (fan hub)

    ASUS ROG Strix B450-F

    Ryzen 5 3600

    Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO

    1TB Sabrent Rocket Q M.2

It's like that thought exercise of "if you replace every piece of a ship... is it still the same ship?" Except these parts are significantly better than the previous parts, and this PC is definitely not even remotely the same PC as before. And in all I spent about the same amount of money building that one (a little more than $1000, partly due to the GPU being pre-owned, and the rest in getting almost everything else on sale) as the one from iBuyPower cost me. And I've been very happy with it! I'm hoping it will last me a good long while, and since I'm gaming at 1080p, I think it will.

She has a budget of 700$ but has told me that i'd be nice if it could be a bit cheaper. Purely for gaming and wants to atleast play at 1080p with consistent 60fps. PCPartPicker Part List

First time using a 1440p monitor, a little confused.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 06:53 AM PDT

Hey, so I recently bought a BenQ EX2780Q.

I'm a little confused with the resolutions, I have the options to run it at 2560x1440 144hz or 3840x2160 60hz.

From my understandings, this monitor is 1440p. Why would I have the option to run it in 4K?

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    Thanks in advance!

    What vesa mount

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 03:01 AM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong sub, but I don't know where else to post it.

    Setup I want to build

I want to build this monitor setup on a single monitor arm (vesa 100), but i can't fnd the right one, as they all need a different height.

Wall mounting isn't an option, as the walls can't handle it.

Do you know a monitor stand which is suitable for this setup?

Looking for a CPU and SSD for my PC

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 07:21 AM PDT

My budget is 150€ for both of them (maybe a bit or more), my mobo is a Gigabyte H110M-S2H (the socket is LGA 1151) and I'd like a CPU to play videogames on mid-high quality that aren't very demanding e.g. RB6, League of Legends... and an SSD for the OS and some low-size programs, my CPU right now is an I3-6100 and I'm looking for an upgrade, I was thinking on buying for 44€ a Kingston SSD 240GB and for the CPU and I3-9100F for 77€. Don't know if there are better options, some feedback will be welcome :)

    What’s the difference between a 2070S and a 2080?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 08:29 AM PDT

Very frequently I see comments about a high end 2070 S is more worth it to buy vs a 2080. Also a 2080 is more expensive than a 2070 S. Im just curious as to what you'd actually see different performance wise.

First time building a PC. Is my build OK?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 10:51 AM PDT

I will use it mainly for programming (java, R, js, maybe python and machine learning). I have 4 monitors so that should work too. Even though I haven't play for a long time, I guess I would play occasionally. An would really love to connect it to my TV + play controllers. Is it even a thing with PC? How can it be done? Price doesn't really matter, but I am looking for value (paying some premium is OK though). What's also important to me is that PC should be as quiet as possible.

Here is what I got so far (I am in Europe so prices are different for me): Case: Fractal Design Define 7

    CPU: Ryzen-3900x

    MB: ASRock X570 Taichi

    RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z Neo 64GB

    PSU: Seasonic PRIME PX-750 Platinum

CPU cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4

    SSD: CORSAIR Force MP600

GPU: Used 1080Ti from local alternative of craiglist for now, hopefully 3080Ti when it comes out.

What do you think? I am a bit afraid that something goes wrong when I try assemble it, did I miss something?

Edit I forgot one important detail - I will be running Linux. Are there any parts to avoid from my list?

Can I install Windows 10 Education on its own?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 11:05 AM PDT

I'm trying to build myself a new PC and my college provides "Microsoft Windows 10 Education (Multilanguage) - Download" for free. I was wondering if this is a way I can get Windows 10 on my new PC without having to pay for it? Does that work and are there any differences in downloading I should know about?

Also I don't have a lot of knowledge of PCs so sorry if I need to ask for a lot of clarification.

    SSD compatibility with z400 workstation

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 10:49 AM PDT

First off, apologies if this isn't the best place to ask.

I have an HP z400 workstation that I'd like to install an ssd in as my boot drive. As the board doesn't support SATA 3 natively I understand I'd need to use PCIe.

A person in this thread appears to have had success using a PCIe SATA control board. I have found what I assume to be the same thing here - am I correct in thinking this will work?

Assuming it would work (and I have the mounting screws and a 2.5-3.5 adapter for the drive bay) is there anything I need to look for/avoid specifically when selecting the ssd itself or will any 2.5" ssd work?

Finally, I'm looking for a ~500Gb drive, any recommendations?

    Thank you in advance

    is a 450W psu enough for R5 1600X & RX570 8GB?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:49 AM PDT

So i've got a corsair cx 2017 450w psu and I was wondering if it would be compatible with a ryzen 5 1600X & the RX 570 8GB. It shows that the estimated wattage of my entire build on PCPartPicker is 435W. I know for normally tasks my PC will run fine but if I play a game like COD Warzone, will I run into some issues?

    Which monitor should I use?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2020 12:50 PM PDT

LG 27GN750: 27 inch (1920x1080) IPS display 240Hz refresh rate 1ms response time* MSRP: $400

    LG 27GL850: 27 inch (2560x1440) nano-IPS display 144Hz refresh rate 1ms response time* MSRP: $500

*This is an advertised response time. I saw a test for the 27GL850 that measured a consistent average response time at around 4.08 seconds on the "Fast" option (there's a faster option too).

1.) Based on the specs, and all other factors being the same, would the 27GN750 yield a faster response time on average, due to, say, the lower resolution and higher refresh rate?

I plan on using this monitor for competitive gaming. I'll be playing first person shooter games that are capped at 120 frames per second.

2.) Would the 240Hz refresh rate be unnecessary or would it still make for a better experience than the 144Hz option?

I'd prefer the higher resolution option, but not at the cost of a competitive edge.

3.) Is a 4ms response time fine? Or will it put me at a signficant/noticeable disadvantage to people with a 1, 2, or 3ms response time?

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm having some minor succes in the music industry and I'm putting the extra money I've earned into better equipment. Most of my connections / colleagues that I've asked for help say that Intel is the way to go and that AMD won't do well for music production since it has a "lower clockspeed". I only know my stuff when it comes to music software, not so much when it comes to hardware. I've been doing some research and this build seems good for my purpose, but my colleagues keep bashing AMD. I have no prior experience with AMD, so it's hard for me to tell. Could you guys please push me in the right direction?

    Extra information:

Since this PC is purely intended for music production I won't be needing a beefy graphics card (I think?). I have an old one lying around that I'll be able to use. I've got an SSD and HDD lying around aswell. I also want it to be as quiet as possible since I'm planning on recording audio in my studio.

    Thank you so much!
