This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Isolation Build Complete

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 02:54 PM PDT

    completed isolation build

A few people requested pics of completed build in my earlier post so here are a couple of pics.

    a few notes:

    1) it was my first ever build and took about 7 hours. i was pretty scared plugging it in for the first time but started perfectly and runs with no issues.

    2) cable management needs to be improved a bit. might look at getting a few white cables but main thing was that 2 seperate power cables were required going to the GPU. the ones that came with the PSU had 2 ends on each cable so ended up with 2 loose ends hanging by the GPU. tied it all up to try to make it look better but will swap for better cables.

    3) GPU is super chunky. it seems secure but i'm a bit worried about it pulling in the motherboard so might get a support brace for it.

    4) the H510 case has a usb 3.2 port in the front panel but unfortunately no 3.2 on the Tomahawk Max motherboard so unusable at the moment.

    5) the cpu cooler that came with the 3700x seems to be working pretty well and temps staying down around 40-50 but will see how they go after prolonged use

    6) the cable management at the back of the case whilst no doubt not spectacular was pretty easy with the channels the case gave me to run things along.

any other questions or ideas i'm happy to hear.

thanks for the help people gave when i was planning this. wouldn't have known where to start without it.

    Build for Church Streaming

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 08:27 AM PDT

I'm looking to build a computer to stream our weekend services after the craziness in the world dies down. I'm currently running my own laptop inside the church itself connected to a webcam and a soundboard, but its not a permanent solution since I leave in 4 months. I want to leave them with a tower and everything they'll need, since they already have a set of 4 cameras to record the service, they're just connected to an ancient machine that takes a LONG time to encode and record to MP4. I'm relatively close to a MicroCenter and would love to build the machine myself, since I did my own gaming desktop recently, but I want a build check here to make sure there isn't any major waste involved. I hope that they could get 2-3 years before needing a major upgrade. The PC would not be used to generate anything graphically apart from some static images, the video feeds are being created by the video camera rig that's already in place. This is just to encode and stream via OBS to Facebook live.

    Ryzen 3 3200 G - $79.99

    MSI - B450M PRO-M2 MAX mATX Motherboard - $74.99

    G.Skill - Ripjaws V 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 CL16 - $46.99

    Thermaltake - Smart Series 500 Watt 80 Plus ATX - $44.99

Thermaltake - Versa H17 mATX Mini Tower Computer Case - $44.99

    Inland Professional - 512GB 3D TLC NAND SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5" - $57.99

    Elgato - Game Capture HD60 PRO PCI-Express Card - $179.99

    Total: $529.93

How is this build? Nearly ready to buy, but I'm trying to squeeze as much out of $1,500 as possible.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:05 PM PDT

    Here is the pcpartpicker list.

This is my first ever build so I wanted to check with you wonderful people first. I'll start purchasing the parts next week and I'm hoping either its perfect or there's some changes that can be made for the budget/intention.

There's a few things I'm worried about - namely, the error that pcpartpicker is giving me related to the mobo. Should I upgrade it? Also, I'm not sure if the case on that list can fit the CPU cooler, im looking at other cases but if i can save $30 i'll save $30

Also, if there's any room to save money, please let me know. My budget is $1,500 but ultimately I'm trying to spend as little money as possible for a basic 1440p/144hz build on newer games.

    Thanks for your time!

    Powersupply

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 01:28 PM PDT

    CPU: i5 4690k GPU: GTX 960 PSU: Corsair 500W RAM: 8gb ddr3

I want to replace my 960 with a 1660 super or a rtx 2060. Will my power supply handle it? I want to over lock my cpu in the future too so I'm not sure if my PSU will handle it.

isopropyl alcohol alternative to clean thermal paste?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 01:50 PM PDT

title says it all. so i built my pc a few months ago, runs fine but temps are a bit higher than i'd like, so i ordered a new cooler arriving tomorrow (im using stock cooler atm). then, today i realized i need isopropyl alcohol to clean the old thermal paste off the cpu, but we have none in the house, and cuz of social distancing and stuff, i'd prefer not to go to the store to buy some. so, are there any safe alternatives? yes i've searched google, but can't find a solid answer.

Is buying an HDD for games a dead trend?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:11 PM PDT

5 years ago I built my first PC and the current trend was buy an SSD for OS and as big of an HDD for games as you could.

Now my friends are saying that trend is dead and you should buy only SSDs for games.

I have been gaming with all my games on my large HDD with no problem, large HDDs are still way cheaper than SSDs.

    Thoughts?

PC Part Picker giving me this error message:

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 01:44 PM PDT

"Some AMD B450 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions."

I'm pairing an AM4 board (Asus TUF B450M-Plus MATX) with an AM4 processor (Ryzen 5 3600), so why is it saying that? I thought they would work together.

    Here's the build:

Learned loads browsing this sub and had a lot of fun building.

I got a good deal on the Vega 64 used on eBay, so I tried to fit the rest of the build around it, let me know what you think, cable management could probably be better.

Concerns on this local PC for sale?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:03 PM PDT

I haven't been into building PCs in a couple years but my brother is looking for a budget system that can play iRacing. I'll post iRacing recommended specs below but it doesn't seem very demanding. I've been keeping an eye out figuring especially during these times people will be selling some old stuff for quick cash, and something popped up today. Again I'm just not familiar with how old some of these specs are. I believe AMD GPU #s are first digit generation and then tier. So a 480 is just an older version of the 580 and a 480 would be better than a 550? I appreciate any tips, here's all the info...

It's an old HP Envy 700 for only $200.

The listing is very minimal just says:

    CPU: AMD A10-6700

    GPU: AMD Radeon RX 480

    Ram: 12 GB

The lack of details, like what type of ram and if the gpu is 4gb/8gb makes me nervous but the price is obviously attractive.

Also if it doesn't have an SSD how difficult would it be for me to activate this PCs windows key on a new SSD?

    iRacing minimum specs:

    • Windows 8.1 64-Bit, Windows 10 64-Bit
    • 64-bit Windows
    • 4 core CPU or better – Some examples (but not limited to): AMD FX-6300, Intel Core i5-4430, Intel Core i5-2320, AMD Ryzen 3 1200
    • 8 GB of RAM
    • A gaming graphics card with at least 2GB of DEDICATED memory – Some examples (but not limited to): Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 @ 2 GB / GTX 1050 or ATI Radeon HD 7850 @ 2GB / AMD RX 550 or better
    • 10 GB of free disk space (40 GB for all cars and tracks)
    • Microphone optional, required for voice chat

Looking to upgrade my HDD to a SSD - what are some recommended 2.5” SSD’s?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 03:56 PM PDT

I currently have a 1 TB Western Digital 3.5" HDD to store my games on. I have a little extra cash laying around, and I'm looking to upgrade that to a faster SSD. So I'm looking for recommendations on 2.5" SSD's that people have positive experiences with. I'm probably looking to go up to a 2 TB drive. Or should I just go for a M.2 NVMe? Which I know is more expensive. I have around $150-200 I'm willing to spend. All thoughts/recommendations are welcomed and appreciated!

    5700xt vs 2060 Super?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 02:05 PM PDT

I am looking to upgrade in the near future. I want to game in 1440p mainly. I dont plan on any streaming in the future, but that doesnt mean that I never will. I watched the Hardware unboxed video but I wanted some additional input.

The 5700 XT seems to be better value however I am concerned with the drivers even though they say they have been fixed.

The 2060 super has ray tracing which could be utilized in more games as they come out. It also adds the benefit of hardware encoding. (which again I may use one day)

    What is your preference?

Can I attach a jumper cap to my motherboard as a place holder?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 03:36 PM PDT

do modern motherboards (B450) still support jumper caps? I have no need to reset the CMOS but I want it there just in case as I have had to do it before.

Also If I place it on, it won't short the pins unless I take it off right?

First Time PC Builder (NO IDEA OF PARTS )

    Hello all,

I'm very glad I have found this subreddit. For a while now I have wanted to build a gaming PC but really have no idea on parts and components. I have done research on how parts work and have learned a great deal.

I want a gaming PC to play:

WOW Fortnite League of Legends First Person Shooters like COD and Battlefield

I don't plan to stream or anything of that nature. My budget is 1800.

    Thank you all .

I tried downloading on steam, chrome, firefox, opera and qbittorent and they all say Im getting really bad internet and the download just fails when it gets to around 70%, like here:

I have tried everything I can think of and im still downloading at awful speeds, I called bell and was on the hold for 2 and a half hours and when I finally got through it said they cant take my call at the moment. Migrating OS to a new SSD without reinstall of files

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:29 PM PDT

So I recently got an 250GB SSD in which I want to put my Operating System to speed things up a little. I have a few programs I can use for the transfer. My existing drive is a 2TB and has about 600GB used at the moment. So I obviously can't clone the whole drive as is.

Is there a way to isolate the OS from the files for the transfer? Or would I simply need to factory reset to make the file system small enough to clone?

Graphics card very loud under load

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:12 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I recently built the following set up

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/HPz7Mc?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Plus a new cpu fan and a couple extra fans, everything seems to find, except for the graphics card. When under loud playing games such as COD or PUBG or tbh even cs go, the graphics cards fans are very loud and it gets very hot, anyone know why this might be?

    Thanks in advance!

Audio Crackle from PC when connected to BenQ monitor via DisplayPort

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:12 PM PDT

I built my computer in November and had no issues with it for a while. I purchased my monitor (BenQ) is December and it gave me no issues until mid Feburary. When connected by DisplayPort I get an audio crackle sometimes and cannot figure out why.

    Things I've tried:

    Connecting via HDMI: No crackle

Connecting computer to a TV via HDMI: no crackle

    New DisplayPort cable: still crackling

Connecting laptop to Monitor via HDMI: no crackle

At this point, should I assume it's a monitor DisplayPort connection issue? I've tried every possible combination of things I can. Looking online has pointed me towards a possible electrical/grounding issue, but I don't know how to diagnose that.

    Am I missing anything obvious?

    Thanks!

Edit: The crackle also happens no matter which GPU DisplayPort connection I use.

Secondary hard drive makes boot up noise

    Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:07 PM PDT

My os and other applications are installed on a ssd and my wd 1tb black hard drive is a secondary drive. But sometimes the hard drive makes the boot up noise for no reason.

    Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW8KAO59ZoA

I only have installed steam games on the hard drive and I haven't run any of the games that are installed in the hard drive.

So my question is, is it normal for a secondary idle hard drive to start making noises even without opening any applications that is installed in the hard drive?
