    Simple Questions - March 24, 2020

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

This sub helped me in the least expected way, hopefully saving my job and college career.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 09:22 PM PDT

I'm a part time delivery driver, full time student. This means that I depend on tips and don't make a ton of money. I have been saving to build a new PC for about a year now. I was really excited to do so and have been looking at dozens of parts for a few months now.

Unfortunately, today I totaled my car after sliding in the snow. Thankfully nobody involved was injured, but I've been trying to figure out what I will do all day. While it breaks my heart, all the money I've saved for this new PC will let me put a down payment on a new car.

Long story short, thank you all for helping, everyone on r/buildapc. It might not always go the way we think, but without the support that can be found here I would have never been saving this money and I would be screwed out of both my job and my college with no transportation. The PC fund will start from scratch sometime, and I'm sure I'll be asking even more questions once I'm ready to build again.

Coronavirus forced me to stay home so it finally forced me to build my first PC. Need help please!

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 02:27 PM PDT

So with the current Coronavirus I'm basically forced to stay home. I have been gaming on my Macbook which handle LoL pretty well, but for FPS it run's like a 1980 Toyota Corolla. So I finally decided to keep my Macbook strictly for school work and have a PC just for gaming and coding. I never built a PC before and decided many times just to build a PC but one day I'll have to learn it and with the current virus why not do it now. So please help! Games I usually play is LoL, Apex Legends, and maybe the new COD warzone more focused on FPS games rn. Thank you!

EVGA RTX 2060 KO or MSI RX 5700

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 01:23 PM PDT

TLDR: A simple head-to-head. Should I buy the EVGA RTX 2060 KO (not the ultra) for $285 or spend a little more for the MSI RX 5700 (evoke or mech) at $300 ?

Relevant Context: It seems smart to spend $15 extra for an additional 2 GB of VRAM. However, I'm quite anxious because when I first built my PC (~5 years ago), I ordered an MSI R9 270x but ended up receiving two DOA cards in a row. Finally, I gave up on that card and bought an EVGA GTX 960 instead, which 5 years later still works perfectly. I switched GPUs because of a recommendation from this subreddit, where someone told me that MSI isn't a very trustworthy manufacturer, they often have DOAs, and that EVGA was more trustworthy.

Using Ryzen 7 2700X with Ryzen 2600X stock fan

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 09:51 AM PDT

Can I cool the Ryzen 7 2700X with Ryzen 5 2600X black stock fan? Is this okay? I have the RGB Wraith fan for it but forgot to bring the base with me haha...

And I really need to use the CPU so would it be okay using it without cooling paste for the moment, given the current world situation? I have some paste left on the Ryzen 5 fan.

Sorry if I sound stupid :)

Real world difference - 3200MHz vs 3600Mhz RAM

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 02:01 PM PDT

    Hi

Planning on building a system with Ryzen 3600, B450 Tomahawk Max and a Samsung Evo Plus Nvme SSD.

For non gaming purposes, how much of a difference is there between 3200Mhz CL16-18-18-38 and 3600Mhz CL16-19-19-38 RAM in every day usage? Is the impact on boot times, app opening time, copying files, editing videos etc, browsing the web noticeable?

This is for a general multi purpose PC used for web browsing, casual gaming, editing family videos, MS Excel and streaming tv / movie content.

    Cheers

Is NewEgg a trusted market place?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 11:43 AM PDT

I was thinking of building a new pc and when I compared the prices from a retailer from my town and NewEgg, every single component was cheaper on NewEgg and that got me thinking, is NewEgg a trusted market place or something similar to AliExpress and Wish? I would love to hear your experiences with this site.

    SSD Issues (Samsung 850 EVO)

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 12:56 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I hope you are safe and doing fine. I am having some SSD Issues in my build since the last Windows 10 update.

**What is your parts list? [Consider formatting your parts list.]

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/RV3475/builds/ (Please let me know if this link works.)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

While updating my windows, a power cut turned off my PC in the middle of the update. I started seeing some boot issues after that. Initially, I was getting a red secure boot violation error as shown in the pictures. I ignored it at the time due to my school work. The 850 EVO was my boot device. After a few days of ignoring the secure boot error, I completely lost access to the SSD. Windows started to load and I always got this blue screen that says inaccessible boot device. The 3 TB HDD was working fine, but I couldn't access the SSD. I cannot initialize the SSD in the disk management regardless of whether I pick MBR or GPT. I have shown the errors in the pictures. I downloaded the Samsung Magician software and the SSD is acting weird in that software, as well. I am not completely sure how much data I have in the drive and couldn't afford to lose it.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I got scared and manually copied everything from the other drive (3 TB HDD) that I had to a separate external drive so that I can format the operating system. I tried searching on the internet. As per some suggestions I found online, I tried to check the disk in the disk management. As I mentioned above, I couldn't initialize the SSD. I cannot access it. I tried connecting the SSD with an external cable to a different PC and it makes that PC very slow and sluggish. I can't even open disk management as it keeps on loading and hangs. I tried changing different SSD ports on my motherboard as well as changing SATA cables. No luck in anything.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/TBuJDoc

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I tried to use Easeus Partition Master to fix the issue but the SSD is not even showing up in that software. I can see the drive in diskpart, but with 0 bytes of storage.

Please let me know if there is anything missing in this post and feel free to contact me if you need any more information. I really need to get this SSD running. I cannot go out due this COVID-19 outbreak. So, the only option that I have is to fix it on my own or with your help. Look forward to get some replies, soon.

    First time building a pc

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 02:06 PM PDT

Wanted to know if my build was could use some tinkering or additions. I want the cost to stay below 1200. I've been doing months worth of research but I just wanted a third party to judge it as well as this shit is expensive. A lot of stuff is most likely going to come from Ebay, Amazon, and Newegg, but if you know of a better place to find a better deal lmk.

GPU idle temps higher after changing from HDMI to Displayport on my FreeSync Asus 75Hz VP247 monitor and enabling G-sync in Nvidia control panel; per a post I saw here yesterday

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 12:31 PM PDT

My idle temps on my Asus ROG OC 1070Ti are now hovering while idling between 50-57c, where as before they were in the low 30s if that, I also have a second monitor connected via DVI. I noticed this change after I saw a post regarding the ability to enable G Sync yesterday on a Freesync monitor using Displayport, and then enabling it in the Nvidia Control Panel which I did, not sure why idling now the temps are significantly higher, I made sure to check task manager and GPU usage is at 0% as well.

EDIT:: I have this coming up which is causing me some concern as I dont have an older cpu.

Warning! Some AMD B450 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

    Upgrading RAM

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 03:16 PM PDT

I am upgrading my ram, and I know how to physically change them, I don't know if there is something I need to do on the computer. Its hard to explain, but let's say, when I upgraded my GPU I just didn't put it in, I had to download drivers and stuff, is it similar with RAM?

    Thank you in advance.

    Ryzen 5 1600 4x4 Ram Question

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 03:16 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some advice on upgrading my ram. I currently have two sticks of 4gb (3000MHz) ram in and going to receive two more identical sticks from a friend. Is this a good idea? I know Ryzen does not support quad channel ram but is there any other issue to look out for? Thanks for the help!

New amd build not booting with no beeps or video output

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 01:00 PM PDT

    Hello,

Bought an AMD 3900x, ASUS TUF Gaming B450M-PLUS (AM4 socket), Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB, Corsair RM650x 80 PLUS Gold 650W, connected everything up with no video output or beeps. The board's LEDs light up, the CPU and other fans work.

Left just the PCU and cooler installed bradboarded (no ram) with the same problem (no video and no beeps, though do modern mobos have a speaker? I also plugged headphones into the line out).

Does this sound like the CPU or mobo, do you think? Never came upon this problem before.

EDIT: Also tested with a working asus 970

    Thanks a lot

What do I need to upgrade to be able to stream/record?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 03:11 PM PDT

Im looking at upgrading my pc, games run fine when recording but no matter the settings the video always comes out choppy and terrible quality. I just want to be able to stream/record at at least 720p 30fps

I've been looking at CPU upgrades because it seems that will help me stream/record but its difficult to find a worthy upgrade in my budget, especially if I need to get a new motherboard with the cpu.

    PC Specs

Intel I5-6600k Cpu Overclocked to 4.4

    Radeon RX 580 8gb

    Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI

Upgrading an i5-6600k to an AMD 3600? for VR use. Any advice?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 02:38 PM PDT

So I have noticed my i5-6600k at 4.2GHz has been holding steady at 100% for many VR titles. Most notably Half-Life Alyx. I really enjoy playing VR but the physics-based games like Bone works and Half-Life gives me a wicked headache from the poor FPS. Is the Ryzen 5 3600 worth the money? I know its a great CPU and very good for the price but in your opinion is there enough performance difference to warrant the upgrade? I also like to dabble in 3d Modeling so the extra threads from the Ryzen will also be beneficial for that as well.

My current system has a 1060 6gig as well but it sits around 60-80% utilization while playing halflife and boneworks so I am aware that an upgrade will help as well but I'm upgrading one part at a time as the money becomes available.

    Thanks for any help!

Edit: I am not opposed to the i5-9600k I just have not seen anyone recommending it over the 3600.

Looking to build a pc sometime in the next month or so

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 02:12 PM PDT

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/49svNq Here is my build I put together. I am trying to keep the cost low but not cheap out on anything too much, I already have a 500GB samsung ssd to put in it, also i already have a mouse keyboard and monitor. This is to replace a gaming laptop with a 1060 max q. The wifi card is necessary because I am unable to run a wired connection in my current house (its a rental and I'm across the house). I will probably go wired in my next house.
