    Simple Questions - December 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Thanks to this sub I was able to build my 11 year old son a pc for $700.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:25 PM PST

He went from struggling to get 75 FPS in Fortnite to getting 250 FPS. More importantly he's able to play some other games.

You guys are great. Thank you so much. It was so fun to build.

Update: lots of posts mad that I said "struggling to get 75 FPS". I was just using it to show the difference between what we had and what we now have. I'm grateful for the old computer and still happily using it. We can play some games together! We have no complaints.

Price comparison : Black Friday vs rest the of the year (+ pulled the trigger !)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:37 AM PST

Hi guys, Titles says it all. I just finally pulled the trigger and got the last pieces of my build. Thank you all for answering my questions and taking time for the community to advice newbies like me.

When I first came asking help for a black friday build some of you, redditors, told me that black friday wasn't THAT good if you were to buy a specific build part by part. Some of you even said to just buy build parts whenever i see a good deal, and that's why I did. I made this thread because my build is finally complete and I wanted to share you the results of my hunt to prices (spoiler alert you were RIGHT xD). For the rig, I'll assemble all theses things this evening.

I bought several pieces of my build during the last 2 months, i bought the first part the 01/10/12 and the last one a few days ago on the 27/11/12 (just before the black friday !) What i wanted was a mid-to-high-end gaming build, fully operating for early december.

I made 3 pcpartpickers list. 1 - Build at slashed prices during my 2 months hunt 1 - Build at full prices on monday 25/11/19 (black friday week) 2 - Build at "Black Friday prices"

As you can see, when you have specific items on your list the black friday isn't that interesting. Overall it's even more expensive than the monday before (can't explain why besides the fact that if demande goes up, prices goes up too) !

For sure there are some tweaks that could be made, for exemple you could switch the R5 3600 to a R7 2700X at 150€ without losing too much performance but that's not the point.

Overall I would say buying during the black friday wisely can bring you to a 5-8% gain in price and MAXIMUM when you're buying individual parts.

With my way of buing parts, i see a few advantages : 1 - I saved 25% of the price (~530€ in savings !) 2 - I bought the parts i really wanted and not 2nd choices 3 - I spread the costs on 2 months instead of 1-2 days (xD) 4 - I replaced some of the parts of my now "old" build and saw some improvements even before my new build was complete (GPU / Monitor / RAM)

The only downside I see is the fact that warranty of individual pieces is spread out too. For the 2nd hand part : please note that I made sure that every part was properly working and still under warranty

In the end I would say that I'm glad I didn't wait the Black Friday to buy the parts because i would have end up for something costlier or less performant.

Thank you guys ! wish me luck, i'll assemble the pc tonight.

EDIT1 (for the sake of clarity): On the pcpartpicker lists you can see PCPartPicker Part List

The two storage drives are the one i harvested from my old build, that's why they are marked as "purchased for 0€" on all the lists - I bought my case (2nd hand deal) with the fans included ! that's why they are marked as "purchased for 0€" on my list and at full price (21,9€) on the others.

    Rx 580 Worth it?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 06:03 AM PST

I want to upgrade from my aging GTX 1050 ti and I saw some deals on sapphire Rx 580s for £120. Is it worth it for the performance in 2019, or should I only go for the more recent offerings.

High-end gaming build, looking for feedback

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:56 AM PST

Hi /r/buildapc! I'm looking for feedback for my personal build.

    Intended Use

Gaming, including VR with a Valve Index if I can actually get one at some point (they're currently not available in my country)

    Perfomance Goals

I'd like to play with the highest graphics settings. I'm not quite sure yet what resolution I want to go for, but frame rate is a priority for me, so definitely not 4K. 1440p should be nice, but I'm tempted to just get a 1080p 240 Hz monitor. I might get both eventually since I want 2-3 monitors anyway. Either way, I want to go as high as possible with the frame rate. Ideally I'd hit 240 FPS at 1080p or 144 FPS at 1440p. How realistic is that for recent games with my current parts list?

    Budget

No hard limit, but I'd prefer to stay below around $3,500 if possible. (Just the PC, not including a monitor.)

    Country

    Switzerland

    Planned Upgrades

At some point next year when I have a bit more time and money I'd like to "upgrade" to liquid cooling, so the build should support that. I know it's not really worth the time or money in terms of performance, but a sick custom loop has been a dream of mine for a very long time.

Other potential upgrades for the next year are some additional SSDs and maybe doubling the memory (which is why I'm going with 2x32GB modules).

I'd appreciate any general feedback and have the following specific questions:

    • I'm probably not going to build the PC until around January, is there anything new coming out until then I should be aware of? Or is there a reason to wait a few months longer? I could wait until shortly before the Cyberpunk 2077 release date in April if there is a good reason to do so.

    • Does anyone have experience with cooling the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X case? Any suggested fan setups? How good are the included fans? I'm probably going to get some additional fans or even replace the included ones if they're terrible.

    • I also need a new monitor at some point since my current one is only 60 Hz. I'm thinking about getting the ASUS ROG Strix XG258Q. But it's a FreeSync monitor and only "G-Sync compatible". Will I have any disadvantages with this monitor and an Nvidia GPU compared to the ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q? The PG258Q is a "proper" G-Sync monitor but it's older and more expensive. The monitors seem to be almost completely the same otherwise. The XG258Q will supposedly go on sale tomorrow at a local online retailer and that would make it about 190 Swiss Francs (~172€) cheaper than the PG258Q.

Thank you for reading my post! :)

Build Help with M.2's in X570 Aorus Elite

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:25 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I already have a Samsung 850 evo ssd m.2 SATA III, and am wondering if I can use an Intel 660p series NVMe M.2 3.0 x4 3D2 QLC on the X570 Aorus Elite without any issues? I believe so because one is sata and the other is nvme, but I just want to make sure before I buy it.

    Thanks!

Thinking about upgrading from 6600k to 9700k

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:27 AM PST

Do people think it's worth? Currently I am running a 6600k at 4.7ghz with 16gb ram and a gtx 1080. I'm finding my CPU is always running at 100% with my GPU staying around 60-70%. I'm thinking of upgrading the processor so its not pushing a high oc 100% of the time what do people think?

500-600 EUR Budget Setup - Please help me

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:58 AM PST

    Hello there tech-veterans,

it has been 15 years that I build my own computer und so I'm feeling pretty insecure and also a bit paranoid. Please help me with some feedback. I would also appreciate some confirmation. I know I could have gotten some parts maybe 10,- cheaper, but I choose those parts with the option of overclocking and future updates in mind.

Thanks in advance fellow tech enthusiasts.

    SAPPHIRE Nitro+ Radeon RX 590 8GB
    € 165,-

    AMD Ryzen 5 2600
    € 117,90

16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 DIMM CL15 Dual Kit
    € 62,90

    MSI B450M Pro-VDH Max AMD B450 So.AM4 Dual Channel DDR4 mATX Retail
    € 64,90

    480GB Kingston A400 2.5" (6.4cm) SATA 6Gb/s TLC NAND
    € 39,90

500 Watt be quiet! Pure Power 11 Non-Modular 80+ Gold
    € 61,49

    Sharkoon S1000 Mini Tower
    € 39,18

    Did I pay too much?

Is the motherboard the right choice? Thats the part I feel most insecure about.

The current price is around 550 EUR, so that I could buy a better fan for the CPU within my final budget of 600 EUR.

There doesn't seem to be a better GPU for this price (the new RX 5500 would be around 100 more bucks and I feel like the 5700 would be a better update, so that I want to stay under 200,- for now and might go for a serious update in 2 years or even later)

RAM by G.Skill Aegis would be cheaper, but I read about the better heat management of the corsair vengeance (overclocking!).

A 400W power supply seemed a bit to short, but maybe there are pricier options for a 500W one. I regret choosing a too cheap one in the past, so this one seemed to be a safe choice. Am I missing something alternatives?

When it comes to cases I really don't know which might be best, but overall Shakoon seems to be a good choice in this budget segment.

Please help me out. I feel really insecure now that I ordered the parts.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

Will GT710 be good enough for 4k video?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:47 AM PST

So... basically... I got a 2700x, for a PC that will be used for only movies and browsing. Should have probably got a 3400g but I got them for the same price, and 2700x is more powerful so I guess its ok.

I'm trying to figure out which GPU to fit in with it ~ will a GT710 be enough? or a 1030? It will only be used to play movies, probably won't do any 4k, but I'd like to future-proof.

Need last check for my 1000 € budget build

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:48 PM PST

    Hello,

my pc is now almost 10 years old. I spent some hours reading and here is my current build for a new one.

    https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/GjWW4n

I will use the pc mostly for games. I will probably oc later, when i buy an extra cooler.

Do you guys have any suggestions on how to improve the build?

Question for the the RAM i picked. Will any module above 3200 mhz work with my cpu and mainboard? Should i just pick the cheapest ddr4 3200 mhz i find instead?

    thanx in advance!

Please help I'm too unsure of myself...

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:24 AM PST

I can't seem to pull the trigger on this build. I'm going to build a PC this Xmas, but every day counting up to that point I find myself worrying about if the parts are good enough and end up witching stuff around a lot. I want a PC that can run games like Rust, Total War, R6S, and big open world MMO games in general. Is this the build that is right for me? My Budget is ~$750 so I picked the parts that would add up to such, but if it is possible to go cheaper, by all means, show me a way.

What do I need to upgrade to improve FPS and stop lag/tearing in newer games?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:35 PM PST

I'd like to be able to run games on Very High settings but also get 144fps at least. Currently games run fine, such as The Outer Worlds, but there is visible lag and tearing when I move around fast or too much.

The same in League of Legends, when there is a lot on the screen the frames drop. I know sound like a noob, but I have no idea how to fix it and what I need to upgrade.

No budget really, but preferably something less expensive but enough to fix the issue and enable me to get high FPS with good quality.

Edit: Added monitor, Asus VG248QE 24.0" 1920x1080 144 Hz Monitor

    I7 860 2.8 ghz

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:32 AM PST

Hey everyone, I have a streaming pc set up and my buddy gave me an old intel i7 860. It's quad core, I have it running with 8 gig mem right now which I will change to 16, but any thoughts on this cpu?

Mind you this computer had a core 2 duo prior so this is an upgrade to get it out of the closet dust box.

    Main rig ryzen 7.

Friend plugged his USB header into his motherboard wrong and bricked some USBs. is there a way to salvage them?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:27 PM PST

My friend recently got a new motherboard and when he was hooking up the USBs at the front of his case he accidentally plugged it in upside down. which of course is normaly not possible due to the pinout but the plug was also shifted over one pin so it "fit".

afterwards he attempted plugging a usb stick into the front. the computer said it was unrecognized in the improperly attached usb port. when he moved it to properly attached usb ports it did not show up at all. It did not appear in windows explorer, device manager, or disk manager.

Is there a way to salvage these USBs with new hardware drivers? or are they just fried now?

    Thanks

Any advice on my $590 PC build?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:11 AM PST

I spent about a week researching the best parts I could put in a PC for under $600, and this is what I came up with. The PC totals up to around $590 and I'm pretty proud of it.

Notes: The CPU and the HDD are currently out of stock but will be in stock in a few days. The fans I'm ordering aren't on the list but are vouched by my friend who found them on a YouTube build video and uses them in his PC. The GPU comes with either Ghost Recon: Breakpoint or Borderlands 3 for free. I already have an SSD that I am transferring to my PC

Someone please talk me out of this, or tell me to pull the trigger, I'm so conflicted.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newegg.com/amp/white-corsair-crystal-series-280x-rgb-micro-atx-case/p/N82E16811139130

I love this case! I think it's super cool looking, plus I'm going for a almost all white build.

But I've heard some issues with it, but I don't know if those are just common issues that all cases have.

One issues I've heard is GPU height can be pretty low, like not being able to put a GPU on with the side window.

Second I heard is the case can be pretty low air flow, but again I heard you can take off the top micro filter for much better air flow.

I plan on using a water cooler for the CPU. And a 2070 super.

Also, is it worth water cooling a 3600x, or would the stock cooler do a good job?

If this wasn't posted in the right sub, I'm sorry in advance.

    Ryzen 5 3600x vs Ryzen 7 3700x ?

I'm debating between the 2. This PC will be an editing/gaming pc but more editing than gaming.

    Helping a friend

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:15 PM PST

So my friend just got a bunch of new parts. He got a 3600 and an MSI B450 tomahawk and he put everything together today and the computer itself turns on, but his monitor, keyboard, and mouse all don't turn on. Only theory that I have is that he has to update the bios for the motherboard. But if everything else doesn't turn on, this would mean he would have to put a 2nd gen ryzen cpu in, right? Any other thoughts?

550W PSU good enough for RX 5700?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:13 PM PST

Title. I bought the Rosewill photon 550W modular 80+ gold PSU off newegg for $40 on sale. Will it be enough for my build? total estimated wattage is 404W but I want your guys' opinion. Thanks! This build has cost me around 820 so I'm pretty happy so far and excited to build it.

    Wifi 6?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 08:10 AM PST

    Wifi 6 question

    Wifi 6 question

If i buy a 802.11ax motherboard, from my understanding it's backwards compatible to my 802.11ac router. but i had bought a ASUS ROG STRIX x570-e mobo, this had 802.11ax. it connected all fine to my wifi, but every 10-15 minutes the wifi would disconnect and be unable to reconnect for a good 20 seconds. i returned the motherboard thinking it was defected. could it be possible this issue i was having was because of 802.11ax to 802.11ac? my motherboard i was upgrading from was a B450 aorus pro wifi 802.11ac. I was looking to purchase either the Rog Crosshair Viii hero wifi, or the MSI MPG X570 Gaming Pro Carbon WiFi. any recommendations or suggestions? i'm running 3600x, 16gb 3200mhz c16 corsair rgb pro. rtx 2060
