This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

To all the young builders put there- your age isn’t relevant to the advice you get

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 08:31 AM PDT

I love seeing all these kids building computers. That's great! More power to them! I don't care how old they are though, and frankly, adding their age seems like compliment fishing. At the very least, it isn't relevant to getting the information they're seeking.

This is a place to get and give build advice and troubleshoot build issues- not a place to stroke your ego. Maybe it's just me, but I'd appreciate if we kept it focused on computer builds, not computer builders.

My first build, finally done! Despite all the hardships

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 07:11 AM PDT

Thank god! After 5 exhausting days my first PC is finally here! At this point it is more of a relief than anything.

I was having trouble with the video output and today I went back to the store where I bought the parts to see if they can diagnose the problem.

They said they can't do that there and need to charge me ~40 bucks to bring it back to the tech support or they can swap a new video card for me for free. So, alright, I think I will try the new card.

And it worked. 3 days late for my birthday but better late than never right? Not gonna lie, a lot more work than I expected, but now it's done. Now I can finally sleep in peace waiting for the drivers install and file transfer.

Is now a good time to build a pc?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 11:04 AM PDT

I'm running on a tight budget and I think I've made a pretty good build. However, I would rather wait a month or two if sales or prices decrease than losing money because I want to play gmod ASAP. The pcpartpicker list for my build is below. I am in the UK.

1660 super fps loss over time

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 09:33 AM PDT

Hey guys, I need some help here.

I have a computer, which i built budget oriented. I started with a Ryzen 3 3200G, MSI B450 Gaming pro Carbon AC, 650W Bequiet PSU and 2x4 GB 2400 MHz G.Skill RAM. On this basis I wanted to upgrade. Firstly, I build the same set of RAM again, because 8 GB weren't enough, because the onboard GPU of the CPU reserced 2 GB for itself. Then I bought a GIGABYTE 1660 super OC as the first big upgrade. Everything worked wonderfully I had 90~ fps in Overwatch on highest settings and 120-140 fps in World of Tanks on highest settings.

But since 2-3 weeks the fps have fallen dramatically. Over watch has 30-40 fps from time to time and World of Tanks is down to 80. I've checked the temperatures they don't reach higher than 60-70 °C, even though it was 35 °C outside.

I tried reinstalling/updating the drivers, but it only helped for maybe a day or two. Also the graphics card an CPU are running on more like ~70% instead 100%. I didn't change any power settings during the time that it worked and now.

My question is something wrong with the GPU or could it be the RAM sticks, where 2 out of 4 may be from a different batch and are now starting to slow the PC? I read something similar on this forum but I am not sure.

    Help is gladly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

Friend was running on integrated graphics for a year

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 01:15 PM PDT

So I have a good friend from school that I would normally game with (we would play tarkov, rising storm 2 Vietnam etc). Anyway one day he complained about visual glitches so I asked what graphics card he had. He screenshared and it was a 1660ti as seen through task manager.

Then I suggested he open Nvidia control panel only for it to come up with an error that no graphics card can be seen. So I asked him to send a photo of the back of his PC and behold his graphics card was not connected to his monitor!

Long story short he connected it and it is now like a new computer. Morale of the story... Connect your graphics card to your monitor!

Help understanding how to choose a compatible SSD? Also, can I put a non-compatible one to work...?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 10:29 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Today my friend showed up with a [Kingston A2000 M.2 2280 NVMe] SSD to use in his new build, the mobo being [B450 AORUS PRO]. The thing is, this is not listed in compatible devices, even though the mobo states that it supports 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4/x2 [ 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe 3.0 x4/x2 SSD support) ].

Now, of course we are upset, but is this a common thing? Does list compatibility really matters in this context and should always be consulted, this purchase being a mistake?

Also, we discovered that some mobos can't boot from NVMe, but how do we search for such information? Couldn't find anything solid stating that the [B450 AORUS PRO] can or can't boot from nvme drives.

The SSD won't show both in BIOS and Windows but we haven't tried all of the internet fixes we found so far. What do you guys know about it that may help or enlighten us? Thank you xD

After a couple of months researching about everything, learning, and reading through countless benchmarks, fan boy fighting, and a lot of Reddit posting my questions, it's all coming along and I couldn't be happier!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 11:55 AM PDT

Thank you guys so so so much for all the help you've given me the last few months, I can't believe this is actually happening, really happy with the build I ended up getting! :D

GPU should be arriving soon, then the only thing I'll be missing is the 4 Arctic P14 fans I ordered. Thanks again!

Finally finished building to my satisfaction (Images included)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 01:43 PM PDT

I initially bought the parts for this in Feb 2019, but it took me a while to put everything together as I wanted, I finally have things done. I want to upgrade some things, but don't really need to right now. (Case mods done May-July 2019, final set of fans and cable management done August 2020)

    Parts list:

    • Asus B350M-A TUF Gaming motherboard
    • AMD Ryzen 2600X
    • Cooler Master TUF Gaming 120mm AIO Water Cooler
    • 16GB (2x8GB) G.Skill Ripjaws V 2400 Mhz RAM
    • Cooler Master N200 MATX Case
    • Deepcool 120M 5-pack 120mm fans
    • WD Black 500GB m.2 SSD
    • WD Blue 1TB HDD
    • Toshiba 480GB HDD (2.5" from old laptop)
    • Asus DVD-R
    • EZDIY-FAB 120mm light loops (x2)
    • EVGA 500W Bronze power supply
    • Asus Strix RX570 4GB Video card

The N200 case is a solid panel design that lacks a PSU shroud. I used my Father-in-law's metal shop to cut a full side panel, then added an acrylic window, along with a 120mm fan hole in the same spot as the original case (right over the video card). I then created a cable shroud with more acrylic and painted it, as well as adding the TUF Gaming logo patch in order to cover some unsightly holes in the case.

Now for some pictures:Side shot (through panel)

    Front shot

    Cables managed

Video in action: https://imgur.com/ZAwRsHo (Side fan isn't spinning as it is connected to the video card and only triggers when that gets hot)

    Best CPU for gaming now?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 10:51 AM PDT

I'm thinking of building a pc, and i'm not sure what cpu to go for. In the build i'm hoping for an RTX 2080 super, 16gb 3600 ram, and maybe a ryzen 9 3900x, or a ryzen 7 3700x. Could someone give me some advice?

Which graphics card should I buy

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 11:32 AM PDT

I'm planning to build a $800-$900 gaming pc and I'm having difficulty on which gpu to go with. I'm currently leaning towards a sapphire 5600xt but I have seen some videos about how the 2060 may be similar or even better performance but not as good of a bang for the buck card.

2nd stick of ram is turning my PC on and off - Help!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 12:22 PM PDT

Just bought a second 8gb stick of ram, exactly the same as the one I already own.. went to pop it into my mobo and when I turned it on it powered for about 3 seconds then turned itself off.. repowered itself for 3 seconds again, and turned itself off again, and keeps on doing this.

Just cycling its power on and off over and over. I have physically unplug it in order to prevent this from happening, as not even holding down the power button (while it's on for 3 seconds) keeps it off.

Now I went through the tests, trying each stick of ram to see if the new one was bad or something.. however my PC powers on and works just fine with either stick by itself, without the other plugged in.

As we speak it's plugged into the "A2" slot and I attempted to slot the new one into the "B2" slot, which is what caused this issue.

And normally I would say screw it, and plug them both into the A1/B1 slots.. except that i'm using the coolermaster fan that covers over my A1 slot completely (hence my 1st stick of ram being in the A2 slot all this time)... which is very unfortunate =(

I have the ASUS z97-p motherboard, and no idea what do about this.. help me out please!

Best B550 Board up to $200?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 06:49 AM PDT

I was going to get the B550 Aorus pro but that has a USB/Memory problem, then I went with the B550-F Strix but that has a faulty lan chip. Can somebody just suggest the best B550 up to $200 in cost that doesn't have anything faulty since if I find another board I want that has a problem I might just shoot myself, (that was a joke but I really am frustrated)

    10600k or 10700 for gaming

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 02:02 PM PDT

10700 is only 20-30 dollars more but has 2 more cores and 4 more threads. Should I get that instead of 10600k for gaming? I think it would be more future proof.

Ditching the Xbox to game for real now— does this set-up raise any red flags?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 02:01 PM PDT

So I'm a new airman, fresh out of basic training and stuck on base for the foreseeable future because of COVID. Instead of the typical high-APR Mustang purchase, a PC is more my style as far as money pits go.

All peripherals too, starting completely from scratch in the dorm!
