    Simple Questions - August 16, 2020

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I Hydro Dipped My PC Case!

We lost power here in New England for a few days last week. I figured what better time to do something like this. Anyway, I thought it turned out pretty cool.

After being unable to afford a PC for 10 years, I finally built one.

With the help of this sub, r/amd, r/buildapcsales and a few other subs, as well as some YouTubers (shout out to bitwit and jaystwocents) I finally put together my dream!

    Here's my part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/catalystLBC/saved/

And here it is all put together (the cable management is next up, I know 😂): http://imgur.com/gallery/x9c4NXy

Also sorry for the picture quality. Broke my phone camera.

Thanks again guys! I'm so happy and proud of myself for getting this together and booted up!

My brother and I are about to build our first budget PC. Are these parts ok because we're not experts or that tech savvy.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 03:50 AM PDT

INITIAL LIST: FSP HV Pro 550w 80+ PSU

Zotac GTX 1650 SUPER OC GPU

    Asus Prime B450M-A Motherboard

    Gskill Ripjaws V 16GB Dual ddr4 3200Mhz

WD SSD NVME Blue SN750 250GB

Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MCB-Q300L-KANN-SOO PC Case

    AMD Ryzen 3 3100

Edit: We haven't bought the parts btw. We're getting second opinions from our friends and this sub before doing anything. Thanks for the help.

Edit 2: So we took some of the suggestions. We can't find some of the suggested PSU's (Bronze PSU's) but we're working on it. We're switching the motherboard for Gigabyte B450, and upgrading the memory to 500 gb. We live in the Philippines btw, so pricing and availability of parts might be different for us than US and Canada. Thanks all the same though.

Edit 3: Switching the motherboard for Asrock B450m (if still available, demand is really high). If we can't find it, we'll switch back to Asus B450, it's the best that's available here in the Philippines. Also, we have extra HDD's here from our old, pre-built PC so storage isn't a problem. Thank you.

EDIT 4: UPDATED LIST We considered the suggestions and we thank you guys for being helpful, and patient with a couple of noobs. We should've pointed out that we live in the Philippines so options and pricing are a bit limited and different, sorry about that. Here's the updated list:

Silverstone Essentials 550W 80+ Bronze PSU (If we were to upgrade different parts in the future)

Zotac GTX 1650 SUPER OC GPU

Asus Prime B450M-A Motherboard (Asrock B450 Pro4 if available, MSI B450 Pro VHD Max is a bit pricey)

    Gskill Ripjaws V 16GB Dual ddr4 3200Mhz

WD SSD NVME Blue SN750 500GB (w/ two 250GB HDD's that we have from our old, pre-built PC)

Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MCB-Q300L-KANN-SOO PC Case

    AMD Ryzen 3 3100

This is the cheapest that we can go, it reached 33K PHP. Again, thanks for the help, feel free to suggest more if you want, we appreciate it.

    Pc shocks me

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 07:14 AM PDT

I got a pc few weeks ago, whenever i touch a metal part or put in a metal usb, it shocks me, not very serious but also not comfortable. How do I fix it, not the whole pc shocks me but certain parts like near the IO shield or under the pc. I dont think its the psu because its new and its a gold standard one.

What is the real benefit of high PSU ratings?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 02:29 PM PDT

I am a new PC builder and keep seeing people scoff at 80+ rated PSU and recommend nothing below 80+ Bronze, but the efficiency difference is only 2-5% between those ratings.

What is the real benefit of high rated PSUs and why is it so important to everyone? Is it thermals, reliability, idk?

Initial Windows 10 install hangs at blank blue screen - anyone seen this?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 09:08 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I just put together my first custom PC in quite awhile, and I've having some weirdness that I have been unable to resolve.

I'm booting from a UEFI USB 3.0 key, using the official Windows media creation tool and the Win 10 ISO from Microsoft, and I get the Windows logo, followed by a blank light blue screen. No mouse cursor or other visuals at all. After about a minute, the computer shuts off.

All parts are accounted for in the BIOS, and the temps seem fine. I updated the motherboard bios from a 3 month old version to a 1 month old version - prior to the update, the light blue screen was a weird interlaced pattern. Now it's pleasantly solid in color. No other changes.

I've tried with secure boot on and off. CSM on and off. The drives already in the machine are brand new with no previous OS installations. The memory seems seated properly.

Anyone seen this before? It's a little crazy making.

    Parts list:

MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge motherboard

EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming

    EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G3 PSU

    i7-10700k

    G.SKILL Aegis 2x8gb

WD Blue 3D NAND M.2 SSD drive

    Seagate Barracuda SATA HD

    Fractal Design Define R6 case

    thanks for any suggestions!

    5700 xt and hdmi-dvi cable

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 10:43 AM PDT

5700 xt will need either displayport or hdmi. My current monitor only has dvi.

Will my set up work just fine if I plug my old monitor with a HDMI-DVI-D single-link cable?

The monitor is 60 hz and 1920x1200. (Eizo FlexScan S2411W)

Never owned a PC, after lots of research this is my first build parts list! Any help/advice appreciated :)

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 10:14 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

I am new to the PC world but am building a PC mainly for game dev as well as some gaming.

My budget is around $1000-$1500, I'd like to only spend $2000 total including peripherals like monitors, but I'll look for those after I've settled on the main build.

Here is my parts list, purchasing all in the US:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor $283.55 @ Amazon
Motherboard Gigabyte B550M AORUS PRO Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $129.00 @ Best Buy
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory $139.99 @ Amazon
Storage Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive $169.98 @ Amazon
Video Card Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB WINDFORCE OC 3X Video Card $499.99 @ Best Buy
Power Supply Corsair SF 600 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply $130.98 @ Newegg

    Total $1353.49

I'm going with B550M motherboard because I am debating on waiting for the new AMD release this year before I buy parts.

I've also chosen a mATX mobo because I am hoping to do a SFF build but I didn't want to go mini-ITX. I am planning on getting the Sliger Cereberus case because it is so small, but it is pretty expensive, so if anyone has suggestions on a small mATX case that is cheaper please let me know!

My biggest questions for this build are:

Is the video card overkill for a system that will mainly be used for game dev? Or is anything else overkill? and Should I wait for the new Ryzen 4000 and Nvidia RTX 3000 to be released before buying parts?

Overall I'd love to spend less money on this build but I don't want to sacrifice too much quality.

    Thanks for any help!

    Building MY first PC!

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 12:53 PM PDT

Built my first PC about four months ago for my wife with the help of this wonderful sub! Now it's my turn. My plan is to use the pc to play games and maybe stream. But it also need to be able to handle my work with CAD and 3D rendering. My budget is $2000 not including peripherals as my work is providing those (to include monitors). I'm leaning more towards an AMD build if y'all think that's a good idea. Any help would be great!

Getting a new GPU to replace a GTX550ti, really living on budget.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 06:54 AM PDT

Hello everyone. I never really had money to afford a whole gaming computer, so I always used laptops for the past years. It has been a dream since I was a child to own a decent rig and not worry about squeezing frames everywhere.

2 years ago a friend of mine gave me her old computer and so far it's what I've been running.

    • Phenom II X6 1100t
    • GTX 550ti 1GB
    • 8GB RAM

Although everything is really old, I can actually enjoy myself with it. But lately my GPU has been giving up and I need a new one to replace it. My budget is still awfully tight and in my country prices are skyrocketing and I can't go far.

One GPU that was somewhat within my range is a RX 550 4GB, but I've been reading around that isn't really good. In my current living situation I can't afford anything past 150 bucks. I know it's not much but that's all I got. As well I'm saving a bit to get a tiny SSD and hopefully speed things up.

I don't understand much of PC building, never really had a chance to get into it. These are my first steps, your help is much appreciated.

(In the future I will be upgrading everything else, hopefully.)

I mostly play CS:GO, GTA V, emulators and few other tiny games. I don't mind 60fps, I don't mind FHD (my monitor is 1360x768), don't mind big titles. Just really need a new GPU that I can afford and won't regret in 6 months.

    Will appreciate any advice, thanks.

PC functioned yesterday, but now will not POST and fans do not spin.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 02:30 PM PDT

    Parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/s6YMjp

I got this machine together last night and was able to get it working with no problems, seems to be firing on all cylinders. However this morning I needed to do some work on another PC so unplugged everything to do that and then hooked it back up, but upon doing so ran into my problem. Upon attempting to start up, the CPU fan spins for a very brief moment, but stops shortly after. None of the case fans or GPS fans spin, but the PSU fan does. The machine does not POST, and after about 30 seconds shuts itself down and starts back up again with the same problem, repeat ad nauseam. If I power the machine down manually, the CPU fan spins again for a brief moment before powering down.

I have tried installing another PSU, but upon doing so the machine doesn't even seem to be getting any power. This may be due to an error on my part, but I know that PSU is functional. I have triple checked that everything is plugged in, and have even disassembled and reassembled everything but the CPU and mobo.

    Thank you for the assistance.

Building a pc for my sister.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 10:36 AM PDT

So my older sister been having issues with her laptop for a long time and is deciding to get a new one. She wanted to get a surface pro 2 because of her profession but trying to convince her to just build instead. I have one issue, I'm not sure if a graphics card is really needed for what she wants to do.

She wants to use the laptop for drawing, photoshopping, and video editting. She is not a AAA gamer and at best would play things like candy crush or 'find it' point and click games thus the idea no GPU is required for this.

    The budget is $800

Installing windows to a new SSD

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 02:16 PM PDT

Hi, I currently have a 1tb HDD in my PC. I'm trying to reinstall windows to my new SSD which is connected with usb. I'm wondering which way would be easiest/fastest? If I use windows "Reset this PC" feature, will it give me the option to install to a new drive? would removing my HDD sata port from the motherboard and putting the windows installation disk into the disk drive work to install on the ssd?
