This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Please help! Built a PC, not working- I’m an idiot mom

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 05:52 AM PDT

Hi- building a PC for my son. I have a Ryzen 5 3600, Asus X570- plus motherboard, geforce 1660 super gpu in a Lancool 205 case. I have built it and when I power up, only the LEDs on the motherboard work. No fans turning on, no signal to monitor (which is plugged into GPU with HDMI ). I have a SATA cable leftover( is this necessary with an SSD?) I have 3 things coming from the case that I have no idea where they go. A power sw and 2 power led. Any ideas? Is this a faulty motherboard? A faulty power supply? Or just a faulty mom? Thanks!

Update: thank you all so much- it was the 2 pin Power SW not being plugged in- I feel dumb, but in my defense, I was soooo mentally fatigued by the end of the build I just had no ability to figure it out. A good night's rest and you awesome people who responded saved the day!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!🥰

If you are a new builder, do not underplay how amazing SSDs are.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 05:18 AM PDT

I just finished my first build 3 days ago, took advice from people to get an ssd for windows and games, it does not disappoint. I have my pc go from off to playing a game before my ps4 is even completely booted up.

I need a chair that allows me to sit upright for FPS games.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:44 PM PDT

I actually have something in my mind which is a chair that allows me to sit upright and have lower/upper back support, that prevents me from leaning backwards.

Im currently using an office chair that is spacious but when I sit fully, my body would slouch and lean backwards. My feet will also hang in the air becoz of how far back im sitting. If i set the chair height to the lowest, my back will ache after shrugging for some time. Hence, ,im unable to play fps games comfortably and competitively. One way for me is to sit upright with no backrest, but it can be very tiring after a while.

Ive also tried scooting my chair in and its not that comfortable, it also hurts my eyes even though i push my monitor back further.

I want to enjoy playing fps games, but it doesnt seem comfortable like rts or moba games where I could just sit back, relax and still perform well.

    Finished my first build

Words: This is my first solo attempt at a build. Last time I messed with hardware was year 10 in an IT Essential course, so I have a slight background. Was very nervous! Electronics always have freaked me out since that course because I learned how dangerous static was, so I was very cautious and worried, which probably helped but didn't help my heart rate.

Big shoutout to this community. You guys are super helpful and I really appreciated the metaphorical hand-holding for my simple questions. It was a fun experience and I might try adding some things on, like a wireless adapter or something along those lines if I feel froggy.

Also, just to get a sanity check, I didn't use any extra thermal pase on the cooler and I didn't add any extra fans (case has two).

    Have a nice day.

Completed first build for my 6 year old daughter!

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 06:08 AM PDT

After getting some different advice here (some that I took/some that I didn't) here's the final build for my daughter's new computer:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3400G 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor $199.00 @ Canada Computers
    Motherboard ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $84.50 @ Vuugo
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory $74.99 @ Canada Computers
Storage Western Digital Green 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $40.25 @ Amazon Canada
Case Thermaltake Versa H15 MicroATX Mid Tower Case $51.40 @ Vuugo
Power Supply Gigabyte 400 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $49.99 @ Canada Computers
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $515.13
    Mail-in rebates -$15.00
    Total $500.13
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-08-15 09:02 EDT-0400

Budget was around $500 and the goal was to initially have something for school, TV/movies, gaming (indie platformers, Minecraft, Roblox, PS remote play), but have an option to add a dedicated low end GPU as she gets older (18-24mths).

I initially tried to get a used 2400G but not many options available on the used market and the ones I did find were like $20 less than the 3400G. Same goes for looking at first/second gen ryzen (1600/2600) and a used GPU. I felt with games taking more advantages of multi-threading it would be more future proofed to go with the 3400G vs 3200G.

Built my very first PC as an incoming IT college student!

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 12:48 PM PDT

    Build

Hey guys, I've always dreamed of building my very own PC since I was 13 (currently 20). I always thought it was way too complicated and costly. I would always tell myself I'll build one next year when I save/have enough money. I felt that learning how to build a PC was very important since I'm going to be a junior at UCF in the Information Technology program this Spring 2021 semester. I know it's a bit late but gotta start somewhere.

So before I began buying the parts I did my research. I watched several youtube videos on how to build PC's and read many many reddit posts on certain parts. I would stay up all night on PC Part Picker to see if parts were compatible. The first part I acquired was my CPU. I was at Best Buy with my gf and I stumbled across the very tiny pc part section. There I saw what I needed, the Ryzen 5 3600. I knew this CPU would be perfect for my needs. Luckily it was on sale, I asked an employee to open the glass so I could buy it, he brought it to the check out and my girlfriend so kindly offered to buy it for me and she did. Thanks baby for buying my first pc part.

Having the first PC part in my hand felt amazing. I knew the journey had just begun and I couldn't stop now. The other parts were ordered from Amazon, Newegg, Microcenter Online and more. I checked r/buildapcsales everyday to find good deals. Thanks to everyone posting awesome deals there. I mostly bought things that were on sale and that shaped my build. Getting all the parts together took about 2 months, patience was key.

Building the PC was not difficult at all. All the hours of youtube videos paid off. Be sure to read the manuals for the specific items you purchased. The only problem I had was installing that big Noctua CPU cooler. It took me about an hour to install that big boy, the long screws wouldn't go in I was legit sweating so much. The whole build took me about 5 1/2 hours. Starting up my PC was pure joy. I'm so happy to have a PC that I built with my own hands. Booting it up never gets old.

    Components -
    Asus B550-f Wifi
    Ryzen 5 3600
    Nvidia RTX 2060 Super
    HyperX RGB 2x8 3200hz
Sabrent 500gb PCIe Gen 4 Nvme
IPSG 1tb pro qlc Nvme ssd
    Samsung 860 Evo 1tb ssd
    Segotep 80+ Gold Psu 650W
    Noctua nh-d15 cpu fan
    2x Noctua NF-F12
    Fractal Meshify C Tower

It's been about 2 weeks since I've built my PC and everything is running smooth.

Sorry for such a long post thank you for your time and while your here~
    Anyone have any game recommendations?
I haven't been able to decide which games to try out yet. I love JRPGs, been trying to find good games.

I'm currently putting documents, photos and game files onto an external ssd to transfer to the new pc, but I'm wondering if theres anything else in particular that i could include to make my life easier when i've moved over...? Any tips would be great:)

Is 550W Bronze rated PSU enough for 5700 XT?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 12:19 PM PDT

Here is my actual build: AMD Ryzen 5 3600; MSI B450 Mortar Max; 2x Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB 3200MHz; Crucial MX500 1TB; Seagate Barracuda 1 TB 3.5" (ST1000DM003); SilentiumPC PAX M70 with 3x120mm fans; XFX TS 550W 80 Plus Bronze (P1-550S-XXB9).

Is this PSU enough for RX 5700 XT? Specifically Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT PULSE.

If upgrade is necessary then which one of those PSU would be better - : Seasonic Core GC/GM 650W 80 Plus Gold or Bitfenix Whisper 650W 80 Plus Gold or maybe something different?

Should I get a Ryzen 3900x now? Or wait?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 12:12 PM PDT

Hi, this is my first post in this sub.

I'm planning to upgrade my 2014 core i5, I'm a Unity developer myself, so my i5 its starting to show its age on Unity build times.

I've decided to go for the best my money can get, in this case the 3900x seems like an excellent upgrade.

Of course my Motherboard and Ram needs to be changed too, but thats to be expected.

My only problem is that I'm not up to date with the news recently about new hardware.

Is the new rizen series coming out soon? Should I wait? What about DDR4? Is it going to be replaced soon?

Sorry for the questions. Just trying to plan my upgrade.

Early disclaimer, I'm not an expert building PCs, in fact, this is the first ever.

I've been working for almost 3 years, helping my family pay debt.I've finally done that and it was time to treat myself to a decent PC, finally, after years of playing in cheap-ass laptops.

Getting repeated BSODs after windows update

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 12:06 PM PDT

I've been getting these nonstop every time I turn on my computer after updating on August 11th they just appeared yesterday, August 14th randomly right after I started talking to a girl on WoW, and at this same time my Instagram was hacked after never having problems before. ranging from multiple reasons.

    KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED What failed: dxgmms2.sys

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA what failed: Nstfs.sys

    SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION What failed: win32kfull.sys

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION What failed: mfefirek.sys (And this one happened immeditaly after typing my password in and after the bsod my computer turns on to no screen signal but all fans run at 100% speed)

    Stop code: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

I've also tried drive clean up and it says I have a memory issue, I've had this ram/mobo combo for like 2 years, but I have a newish nvme drive I put in 2 months ago and has been running smooth this whole time.

I should also mention one of the biggest give aways that something is wrong is that unless I go into user settings and wait 2 minutes my profile picture won't load anywhere on the PC, not on the login screen taskbar or wherever else it would normally show up.

I've tried resetting the PC through windows and it BSODs everytime during the reset process, I'm currently considering to do the fresh install through windows defender as I see no other option, if anyone could help that would be great.

Also I don't have windows recovery set up, even though I could've swore I did, And I've tried removing the updates and I can remove two of the ones I installed on the 13th but the one I installed on the 11th was a security update so is unremoveable, also I could've swore I downloaded all 3 on the 11th but for the other two it says the 13th..

How Long After Release “Should” GPUs become available?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 08:10 AM PDT

Obviously things are subject to change this cycle, especially with COVID, but how long after release has Nvidia typically begun shipping units? Trying to determine whether or not I want to buy a temporary GPU for $100 to get my Ryzen rig running for the time being.

EDIT: Good points guys. I just bought a 1050Ti for 70 bucks to hold me over, as I don't need to do any gaming for the next few months.

So I forgot to post this but just wanted to share my proud accomplishment. I know most people won't really care but I've always wanted to build a PC and finally got around to doing it. I spent months researching so I wouldn't mess up and I'm so happy I completed it without any issues.

For my next build (hopefully soon) I wanna improve my cable management for sure, and add more aesthetics, like sleeves cables. Anyways thank you all on this subreddit for helping me!

    Major issues with WiFi strength/ping

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:46 PM PDT

So everytime Im online (iracing) I get kicked from the server and then I look and my ping is like 600. So I then run a speed test and on my pc and I'm getting like 8mbps download and my ping is 11. But then I run the same test from the same provider on my phones WiFi and it's getting 70mbps and 10 ping. I go back Into a server online and I get kicked for having a ping of 500+. It seems to be my pc that has the problems, not my WiFi, my pc is on the desk right next to the 42 inch screen i use it for and the soundbar, could it be interference? I'm sick of it

It is finally time to retire the 2500K and upgrade to Ryzen

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:20 PM PDT

After 9 years my i5 2500K is finally showing its age and can no longer hold up. Even with a 4.5 GHz overclock it just cannot keep up anymore and is limiting just about everything. And recent games have pushed my current R9 390 to its limits as well. The final straw that made me consider the upgrade was when playing COD: Warzone and I saw that just about every component was being completely maxed out, pinning both my CPU and GPU at 100% and it could just barely push 60 FPS. That and the rather frequent crashes in many games which I suspect is related in no small part to the overclocks I have set to boost performance.

This will be a primarily gaming focused build, with some productivity work on the side. I occasionally run VMs and such for testing so the 32 GB of RAM will be put to good use. I was originally considering going up to a Ryzen 7 for the extra cores but I figured I don't regularly run anything that really needs the two extra cores.

As far as expected performance I run at 1080p with a 144 Hz monitor so I aim to get 60+ FPS in most if not all games.

I'll be reusing my existing case, PSU and some fans. I also have a Kraken X41 AIO but attempting to get an AM4 bracket from NZXT has not produced any results yet. So I figured I might as well upgrade to a 280mm radiator since I will be removing the last of my HDDs in favor of SSDs so I won't need the HDD cage anymore giving me room for the bigger radiator in the front.

There are a couple of things I am not sure about the first being the RAM. I tried to find the specs on different types to determine if any given set was single rank or dual rank, I am looking for single rank RAM for maximum performance. This is why I have 4x8 GB instead of 2x16 GB since my understanding is that 16+ GB DIMMs tend to be dual rank. I am also open to suggestions for the motherboard. I have had good experience with ASRock in the past, in fact I have 4 other systems using ASRock and ASRock Rack motherboards, which is why I am leaning towards ASRock for this build but I would like a second opinion.

Now I am a stickler for some things, such as Intel NICs, so any motherboard that does not have an Intel NIC is a instant disqualification. I also don't care much for WiFi, if a motherboard has WiFi I wont disqualify it but it really makes no difference as far as I am concerned and if there is a version of any board with no WiFi that is what I will choose.

Here is my proposed new build.

RGB CPU COOLER WITHOUT RGB HEADERS ON MOBO

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:14 PM PDT

Hello. I'm about to get a new case which has multiple RGB 120mm fans (the case provides rgb controller so I dont think that I have to worry about the rgb on it too much), however I'm also getting an RGB Cpu cooler (cm hyper 212 evo rgb black edition) and I know that my motherboard doesn't have RGB headers on it, will the RGB work with normal header? If not, what could I do to make it work? I've heard that there are RGB controllers, but I dont know what to look for etc. Help appreciated

3770k in 2020. Wait or a new build?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:14 PM PDT

Good day to all! I apologize for google translate English, but this resource is impossible to pass by. The essence of the situation: in 2013 I got an excellent PC for those times, which I did not have time to use much. Configuration:

    CPU: i7 3770k.

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10 8x2.

    Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z77.

    СPU cooler: Zalman CNPS12X.

    SSD: KINGSTON SH103S3240G 240 GB.

    GPU: ASUS 680 GTX 680 2GB GDDR5 DirectCU II.

    Power Supply: Thermaltake Smart SP-730P.

There was a lot of free time recently and I started reading numerous forums. As a result, my processor was scalped, overclocked to 4.6, memory overclocked to 2133, and purchased a GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 Super WINDFORCE OC 3X [GV-N207SWF3OC-8GD], a Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SSD for gaming.

Due to the fact that a new generation of consoles is coming out soon, I had a question about the relevance of this build and its service life. That is, he can sell me a CPU, RAM, cooler, motherboard, while I can get at least something for them, and upgrade, say, to 10400f, 32GB DDR4 RAM, nvme, with a further upgrade to a top processor with PCI-E 4.0 (in 2021). Or should I just stay in place and wait for DDR5 and a completely new generation of processors?

Sorry for the confusion. Thank you in advance for your attention.
