    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    I've been playing 60hz for 2 years when I thought I was playing 144hz...

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 03:08 PM PST

So 2 years ago I decided to build a gaming PC and thought I was playing my games all this time in 144fps. Decided today to actually see how much fps I was getting in rocket league....wasn't getting above 60hz. Looked up a video on YouTube and apparently Windows had my 144hz monitor at 60hz by default. If anyone is like me and isn't an expert in building PCs, this is a friendly reminder to check!

Edit: Some people have been asking how to check this, there is a comment below that tells you how but ill do it here...go to windows settings>display settings>scroll down to advanced display settings>click on Display adapter properties>go to the monitors tab> you'll see a drop down menu.

What are the absolute do’s and don’t of building a pc?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 07:35 AM PST

All my parts should get here today or tomorrow. I've watched plenty of videos and read a ton but I still want to know what are the absolute things you must do and the things you shouldn't do.

Need opinions on an overkill 1080p build

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 09:19 AM PST

    Hey all

Had the great people at r/buildapcforme help out with a build and have matched together what I think is ideal for me with a bang-for-your-buck concept but with a fairly flexible price range. I will be using this to game at 1080p at 144hz - next title being Cyberpunk 2077, but I also edit videos from time to time in Sony Vegas.

Would love you guys' comments on the build. Also, I gotta admit I don't know, what are the extra fans for? Or rather... are they necessary and where should they be placed?

Any suggestions are also welcome :)

    RGB-Free, blacked out Mini-ITX build.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 11:26 AM PST

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/rainboss/saved/2TJKpg

This build is 100% inspired by THIS BUILD it's just more up-to-date one.

Also if you can see in the original build the person that built it used aftermarket GPU that has heatsink visible which is big aesthetic no-no for me therefore I am opting in on using the founders edition of 3070.

As everyone may know it's almost impossible to get 30 series GPUs nor 5000 series Ryzen CPUs, so as I am stuck here waiting I thought I might as well share my build and ask for any insights as I didn't get much attention on r/buildmeapc.

My current main concerns are that I am not sure what fans I should mount in front of the case whether 120mm or 140mm and what brand and if I should also swap out the existing case fans. Second problem is that motherboard has only 1 fan header I am forced to use the fan header splitter and I am not sure if the one I chose is any good (seems to be doing fine according to amazon reviews).

EDIT: Updated list with +100W on PSU as it hurt people's feelings.

My 3070 + 5600x build is finally complete!

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 12:35 PM PST

Here are the pictures of the build. Not the best cable management, but I think it looks clean enough.

This build has been a long time coming. I've wanted to upgrade for a while now from my 980ti and 4690k, which were still strong at 1080p but lost their vigor at 1440p. I got both the 3070 and 5600x on launch. The 3070 from Best Buy and the 5600x from Newegg. I've already had this computer built for almost 2 weeks, but I had to go on a business trip, and I didn't want to take the pictures in a hotel.

This combo is fantastic and is well worth the wait and stress of trying to get the 3080. I also know that the Arctic II 360 is way overkill. I'm not huge into overclocking, but I do like the idea of a quiet computer, and I said what the heck and went all in. Even under load it's barley more than a hum and at max fan speed for everything it's inaudible when I have headphones on.

I understand some parts of this build are overkill, the CPU cooler, the amount of RAM, the SSD, but I wanted a kick-ass build that looked dope and performed great, and that's exactly what I got.

    RTX 2060 or 5600xt

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 12:17 PM PST

So I have a ~300€ Budget for a GPU for my first ever gaming PC and as far as I know these are the best option for the price. I'm also planning on a Ryzen 5 3600 and I already have a 144hz 1080p Monitor.

And something else, would a 530w PSU be enough for this build?

    PC for Grandma

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 10:48 AM PST

    Hi there lovely Reddit people!

It's Grandma's birthday and her PC (which she uses for home office work as well) just bit the dust. We're looking to get her an awesome upgrade that may be a bit overkill but will last her for a while.

Specific requirements are onboard graphics ("I don't want no external graphics card!"), multi-threading (work-specific application apparently sucks without it), SSD (been using spinning rust for too long), and while we are at it getting a decent (not huge) amount of storage. Plus Wifi motherboard because ... reasons.

The case is over the top because it looks brilliant and the family laughed and said "get THAT ONE" when reviewing possibilities on PC Part Picker.

Questions: 1. Would we be better off getting a smaller SSD for the OS and an external for the pictures?
    2. What about a general 1TB SSD (I have a 1TB P1 available for cheap hence a possible preference, but happy to change around). 3. What would you change around?

Budget is around 400€, we have monitor/KB/mouse already, and the shipping costs listed below are over because Alternate will only charge one lot of shipping for all items.

    CPU Intel Pentium Gold G6400 4 GHz Dual-Core Processor €65.69 @ Alternate

Will the prices 3070/3080/3090 ever be stable/normal again?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 02:51 AM PST

    It's insane.

I have been browsing trough Kijiji, EBay and Amazon troughout the days and have noticed a few things. One reason for it being out of curiosity and another is because I want to buy a 3070 myself.

Base prices for an rtx 3070/3080/3090 are 100€ higher than what the Original Price used to be. Not only do scalpers sell it for that or (let's be real the latter of which) WAY HIGHER, but also Manifacturers. Cheapest of them being Zotac with 600€.

I wonder how long this will last and if ever these ampere GPU's will go down in price.

    ''Upgrade'' from Ryzen 7 1700X to 5600X...

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 10:31 AM PST

I plan to upgrade my CPU in some time, I aim to get a Ryzen 5600X, currently have a 1700X. However, feels like a ''downgrade'' due to the lower core count. Is my feeling justified? I plan to use my PC for VR gaming/ desktop gaming.

Edit: Built my tower in 2017 mostly for video editing and a little bit of gaming. Changed job now it would be mostly for gaming. I want to buy a 3080 when the stocks are available.

My monitor has been at 1280x1024 for 5 years, when it could've been at 1920x1080

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 11:38 AM PST

So, Im here browsing reddit and I see this thread. After reading it through, I had a primal surge of pure brainpower, I had finally unlocked 100% of my brain. I do a quick google search of "How do I know the maximum resolution of my monitor," looking for a solution to my problem of my monitor only fitting 1280x1024. Previously, because my monitor is an older, bulky, hand-me-down, I thought that when I went above 1280x1024, the monitor just hit its limit and wouldn't be able to properly fit a higher resolution because of the age of it. This was reinforced 5 years ago when I searched for a way to expand the resolution with no solution. Here I am 5 years later, one spontaneous google search set off by a reddit thread, into a little bit of article reading and I find out all I've ever needed to do all this time was adjust the settings in the control panel of my tv to fit the larger resolution.

    i7 6700 and RTX 3070 Huge bottleneck

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 10:17 AM PST

So i wanted to change my gpu for a very long time now, i used to have a GTX 970 from msi paired with my i7 6700 but i couldn't use my pc for gaming properly since my 970 just wasn't enough for most of the modern games, i decided to threat myself and get an RTX 3070 thinking that the bottleneck wasn't gonna be that much.

Well it seems that i might be wrong, i'm playing modern titles like Cod Warzone at 55-70 fps all se to ultra on a 1080p 144hz monitor, and lowering some game settings didn't make any difference.

I also tried to use Nvidia DSR so i could run my GPU in 2k, or even 4k but it didn't make any difference.

So my question is the following: Is my CPU really the problem?

Also it's not sitting at 100% while playing, it goes from 70-90% of usage so idk what to think about it.

    My specs are the following:

    • i7 6700 3.4ghz
    • Gigabyte RTX 3070 gaming OC
    • Asus h170 pro
    • 16gb (2x8) DDr 4 ram 2400mhz running at 2133mhz
    • EVGA supernova 750w g3
    • NZXT Kraken M22

Thank you so much for your time.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 02:16 PM PST

So my card finally died on me last night and won't pick up an IMG now at all. (3 year old Vega 64) so I decided rather than buying a weaker card then another one later down the line I'd just bite the bullet and grab myself a 3090 it wasn't the card I wanted but they are almost all out of stock, atleast I'll have a usable pc again.

Is it “actually” easy enough to build a pc for the first time?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 12:27 AM PST

This is my build and I'm expecting to get them by this year. I watched many youtube videos about pc building and I'm just not confident enough that I won't be breaking those expensive components. They don't seem impossible but also not easy.

Should I just take it to nearest pc center and pay $100 for the build? I'm also trying to overclock my cpu and ram which makes it much harder for me.

    What are your opinions?

My boyfriend helped me pick the parts i might need, but we are a little nervous regarding compatibility and also going pass our budget (900 USD). I would greatly appreciate you guys' help on reviewing the list of parts we chose. TIA, I'm hoping we are on the right path.

    First Build - Overkill?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 02:02 PM PST

Debated back and forth on a high end laptop I can play some games on + use for work versus desktop + work laptop. 99.99% sure I'm going to go with option B.

I don't game often, and generally when I do they're older games - POE, Grim Dawn, Witcher 3 - but will be jumping on new Elder Scrolls and Cyperpunk.

I also plan on using a CAD software to design plans for my shop. I'm using woodworking to pay off my student loans.

    GPU: MSI Radeon 5600 XT

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

    MOBO: ASUS TUF b550-Plus

    PSU: Corsair RM550x Gold

    SSD: Intel 665p 1 TB M2 2280 SSD

    Ram: XPG Spectrix 32GB DDR4 3200

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Tempered Glass. Went with Fractal case because it has a dark tempered panel and I personally don't like all the LEDs.

I have a buddy to help me put it together. Trying to stay below the $1,000 mark.

PC won’t post after installing new RAM, even with old RAM installed.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 11:49 AM PST

Basically the title. I bought 16gb of RAM (g.skill ripjaws 3200) and tried to install it into my pc with the old RAM (Adata 8gb 2400) out. It booted, but only detected one stick (8gb), even in BIOS. I reseated the sticks, but then it didn't post at all. I tried moving the new sticks around, even tried with my old 1x8gb stick, but no luck. The motherboard doesn't look damaged and the RAM clicks in fine. If anyone could help me with this issue it will be greatly appreciated!

I’m very new and directionless in the world of PC building and with a very small budget. How do I build a quality gaming PC, able to handle most games on high, minimum of 60 fps?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 01:58 PM PST

As stated, I am very very new to this world. Never done it before and never had a good pc. I've come to pretty much hate pc gaming because I've never been able to have a lag free experience above ultra low settings on any computer I've owned and as such I have been exclusively playing consoles for pretty much my whole life.

There's a few things attracting me to having an actually good pc and not this prebuilt Lenovo hunk of garbage, but I have no clue how to go about this, and I need your help.

I want to build a pc that can handle high settings on a minimum of 60 fps or higher on most games, even graphically demanding ones, but my budget is very, very tight. I'm talking just a few hundred bucks here. Not even $500. Is this possible?

And if so, what are all of the components I need? I know nothing about hardware and specifications and frankly I don't have the time to learn much more than how to build the system itself.
